Brinks guard shot during discount store abduction in Hammond area
Beulah Miller of Chicago was wounded in the shoulder when she refused a bandit’s order to move, as a Brinks guard William Mahnke was shot in a struggle during an attempt to steal money bags from a Brinks truck outside a Topps discount store near U.S. 6 and U.S. 41. The bandit fled in a stolen car after exchanging shots with a second guard, with police seeking two possible accomplices and a red late-model Chevrolet.

Staters Honor THS Student in Hoosier Girls State
Donna Thatcher, 16, a Rushville High School honor student, was elected governor of Hoosier Girls State at Indiana University. One of Worst Air Disasters in Peacetime
A KC135 military transport crashed on a mountainside near El Toro Marine Base early today with 84 aboard, including 72 Marines, in one of the deadliest peacetime air disasters. Bodies were scattered. seven hours after the crash the scene remained grim with no survivors. Seventy Marines were from Camp Pendleton. the plane had taken off at 1 44 a.m. PDT en route to Okinawa with a Honolulu stop, possibly bound for Viet Nam.
