Robert B. Robertson 7 Bargersville was discharged from second degree murder charges in the death of Mrs. Agnes C. Chappell 33 Indianapolis at a hotel last September. The prosecutor sought dismissal after an official report cited acute alcohol intoxication as the cause of death.
President Kennedy pledged the United States would risk its cities to defend its Allies in a speech at St Pauls Church in Frankfurt marking a major address on his 12 day West Germany tour. A million Germans greeted him as reporters noted an exceptionally warm reception during the 20 mile guard route from Hanau where he reviewed 15 000 American servicemen.
In Dayton Indiana a white shirted man held up the Bank of Dayton on Indiana 38, took cash in a pillowcase after handing a note to assistant cashier Mrs. Trene Wiggins. Police set roadblocks and later captured two men believed linked to the robbery and recovered the loot. The bandit was described as 5 feet 4 inches, 150 pounds, with a dark complexion, driving a light colored car southward.
INDIANAPOLIS UPL Former State Rep Laurence D Baker Kendallville resigns as Republican member of the State Board of Tax Commissioners ending two decades as a watchdog over state spending. Governor Welsh accepts the resignation and names Herbert G Holmes Peru as successor. Baker served in the House 1945 to 1958 and chaired the State Budget Committee.
A study by Indiana University officials endorses a single unit county school system for Boone County. The 26 page report, prepared for the county committee, cites proximity based attendance, unified administration, expanded specialized programs, and potential cost savings. It notes a 5,000 pupil minimum for efficiency and leaves building usage to district governance. The panel will wait for referendums before acting.
Rolla M. Malpas, a retired insurance executive who died Saturday, filed for probate in Boone Circuit Court. The will bequeaths about $2,000 to charitable and educational causes, including $5,000 to Omega Chapter of Psi Upsilon for an education fund at DePauw University, $5,000 to Witham Memorial Hospital, $5,000 to Shriners Hospital, and a Malpas Trust to fund DePauw scholarships. Guardian Citizens Bank and Trust Co. Lebanon is executor, with five trustees to administer the trust.
The Red Cross Water Safety Program started Monday morning at the Lebanon Seashore Pool with 375 Beginner Swimmers in morning sessions at 9 30 and 10 15 and one at H1 am. 107 Advanced Beginners met at 11 am, with schedule changes posted at the bathhouse to balance enrollment. Registration for Beginners closed May 15 due to space and time constraints, and junior and senior course registrations were handled last week with volunteers including Sharon Board Frances Coons Libby Coons Mary Ann Doran Roy Flanary Rachele Hargis Paula Jeffries Linda Koehler Dick Porter Linda Ridgway Susie Smith Carol Stencil Kathy Sullivan and Jim Denny.
Protesters lodge a challenge to a planned Lebanon school merger as community divisions surface.
A last minute remonstrance filed by 52 Perry Township residents against the Lebanon Metropolitan School merger threatens the plan. Court timing on the filing is disputed. objectors say an extra grace day exists. Officials foresee complex budget and revenue challenges amid the merger process.
Police Chief Wilbur Slagle urged youngsters to follow safety laws while bicycling on city streets. Officers report bikes operated without licenses and many youths ride on sidewalks and block the square. He warned against carrying passengers and failing to ride single file.
A sick squirrel that bit two Lebanon youths, Christy Gott aged 11 and Barbara Click aged 12, was sent to the State Board of Health for examination after the animal scratched and bit them in Memorial Park yesterday. Officers recovered the animal following the incident at Lebanon addresses 908 Hopkins Road and 504 South Lebanon Street.
A fire swept the second floor of a building called the broom factory at the Indiana Reformatory in Pendleton damaging cotton bales used for mattress manufacture. About 3,000 inmates were unharmed. Officials said spontaneous combustion likely started the blaze, which was aided by local firefighters and lasted more than an hour. Damages were estimated at under $12,000. Commissioner Arthur Campbell visited the scene.
The body of Billy Gene Wade, 21, was found Monday in the Patoka River near Winslow after his disappearance on March 29. Mr and Mrs Grester Hamm of Winslow located the body. An autopsy was ordered. police reported no signs of foul play. Wade was the son of Orval Wade of RR 1 Winslow.
Final week to register for the summer reading program at the Lebanon Library runs through Saturday June 29 with the contest continuing until July 1. Enrollment shows 189 children entering 4th to 9th grade and 21 completed. 111 are registered in the star contest for second and third graders.
The Democratic party selects Atlantic City as the site for its August convention to renominate Kennedy for a second term. Chicago and Miami Beach were alternatives, with Atlantic City offering about 625,000 in combined public and private backing. Governor Hughes praised the choice.

Milan Micic of Hobart and his brother Dragic Micic of Gary were involved in a head on collision on a Harrow county lane Sunday night. Dragic escaped injury while two passengers in the other car were hurt in Crown Point reporting.
Indiana State Police set roadblocks in southern Indiana to capture Charles E Richardson a 39 year old Evansville factory worker accused of shooting his estranged wife eight miles east of Oakland City. Mrs Richardson was shot in the back while in a car with her mother and two other women. He reportedly told her I ve got something for you and he then took clothes into his car. Authorities believe he may flee toward Kentucky where relatives live and Kentucky State Police were asked to join the search.
