Lebanon farmer Jacob Kersey found dead by gas
John Jacob Kersey a 47 year old prominent farmer of Boone County was found dead at his East Pearl street home. Neighbors forced entry after he failed to return. two gas burners on the kitchen stove were open and his body lay on the floor. Police say the death was by self administered gas asphyxiation, possibly a long planned act prompted by illness. He had battled lung abscess for years and recently moved between residences before his death. Funeral arrangements set for Thursday at the Methodist church.

First Drill Held for 135th Battery Band
Twenty four Boone County boys answered roll call for the first drill of the 189th Field Artillery regimental band at the Lebanon Armory in Indianapolis Avenue. Three new musicians were sworn in Cletus Walker Howard McDaniel and Samuel Roas. Director James Hoy seeks to reach thirty one by next Monday night with remaining enlistments. Next practice slated for Thursday July third and band instruments to be distributed. Uniform measurements were taken and basic squad drill taught. Hoy favors Monday nights by band vote to set a standing practice night.

Veiled Prophets Parade Draws Thousands In Indianapolis
In Indianapolis on June 24 the Veiled Prophets caused a day of street entertainments with impromptu shows and a grand parade. About 60 bands and nearly 10,000 prophets in rainbow uniforms marched for two hours. Officials of the supreme council met and the group planned a drill contest at the state fair grounds and a massed band title event followed by a Mardi Gras style carnival at night.
