The Senate voted 92 to 5 to censure Sen. Thomas J. Dodd of Connecticut for financial misconduct, finding his actions against morals and public trust. He remains in office. the censure, though severe, has limited practical effect. A separate vote addressed the travel expense double billing charge.
Pope Paul VI defends priestly celibacy amid criticism and defections, calling it essential in the modern world. The encyclical sacerdotalis caelibatus argues celibacy strengthens priests’ bond to Christ and counters modern pressures, detailing theological and psychological reasons for upholding the vow.
At Camp Lejeune North Carolina a CHS3A Sea Stallion and an HUSE Huey collided during a touch and go training flight killing 20 Marines and injuring at least a dozen. The crash occurred at 9 am near the New River air facility on sparsely wooded ground. Marines from the General Military Subjects School were aboard the helicopters.
Patrick Lyndon Nugent, two days old and grandson of President Johnson, receives a prize heifer and a sizable savings bond from Luci and Pat Nugent. Johnson also transfers a 1000 acre Texas hill country ranch, known as Luci's place, to the couple as a wedding gift. He notes the gift heifer will join the Lewis-Nugent ranch.
Tri Kappa sorority plans its annual ice cream social at Lebanon Memorial Park on Tuesday June 27 as part of the July 4th festival. Proceeds fund philanthropic projects. co chairs Blarsis and Mrs Holloman lead active and inactive members with committees handling food decor publicity and serving. Serving begins at 5 p.m. with hamburgers hot dogs cottage cheese and desserts on the menu.
Lebanon Kiwanians heard a program titled Indiana Sur prises s detailing state tourist sites. Judy Morgan, Indiana Tourist Division aide, said Hoosiers and visitors enjoy attractions from 1000 inland lakes to the Speedway. Senator McCormick helped arrange the session, with six Frankfort Kiwanis guests and Lions welcoming remarks.
A morning blaze at the Claypool Hotel in Indianapolis sent about 400 guests fleeing in nightwear. No serious injuries, smoke inhalation cases treated, guests and staff accounted for. Tacoma Cubs players escaped via bedsheets, with pitcher Bob Scott suffering a minor back injury. The fire damaged the fifth floor and much luggage.

The second event is a Sunday 4:00 p.m. swim party and pitch-in at Krannert Y with tennis swimming badminton horseshoes fishing and canoeing. supper at 6:00 p.m. Guests may be invited.
Cort L. Kegley 41 of Franklin general sales manager for Nuclear Measurements Corp. was killed in a late Thursday plane crash in Virginia while en route to Washington. He had been with the firm about 11 years.
Leota Muse of Zionsville died Thursday night at Witham Hospital. Funeral arrangements announced on obituary page 4.
The Interior Department called New York and Indiana’s water quality standards among the best submitted so far as 50 states prepare interstate standards due by June 30. The Maumee River system in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is cited, with Udall noting ten states have filed final or preliminary standards.
A Lake County grand jury returned 25 indictments in a probe of a State Board of Accounts report that $390,000 in questionable food orders for the poor were issued by the Cab in et Township trustee's office. Most indictments are secret pending arrests, with nine witnesses ordered to comply or face contempt. The state report linked the relief misuse to 1961 and 1966, naming the township trustee Milton, former trustee Harold DeVault, and Gary grocer Jerry Maroules.
A Glassboro State College house, 118 years old, was air conditioned to host a summit between President Johnson and Soviet Premier Kosygin. Wires and 12 air units were installed to keep Hollybush cool amid high humidity. The town, chosen for its midway location, prepared to handle 1,000 plus reporters as telephone lines were added to support coverage.
Daryle R. Poland 21 of Route 2 Zionsville identified as a suspect and jailed on public intoxication after the break in. Clarence Bland 24 of Indianapolis was found in a car outside the grocery. Both face second degree burglary and auto banditry in Superior Court with arraignments continued to June 28. Bonds set at 2500 and 3000. An attorney will be appointed for Bland and Poland will have one. The car tied to a Peru resident was likely stolen from an Indianapolis tavern.
Marion Sanitation Department employee Ivey Scott found a newborn infant in a plastic bag at the disposal plant while sorting garbage. The coroner ruled death by suffocation. the baby, believed under two hours old, was wrapped in a green towel inside a polyethylene bag. Investigators canvassed the area for evidence.
Carl Burgin aged 22 of Lebanon was found guilty in Circuit Court of assault and battery from a March 10 incident. He received 90 days in jail and a $10 fine with costs, suspended due to his impending Army service. The case involved a beating of Danny R. Likens, 20, during which a chain was used and clothing torn. Another accused faced theft charges involving $30. Burgin was represented by James McIntyre. Additional court actions set for June 30 include arraignments of Marion Jacob Williams and Gene Adair.
President Johnson and Soviet Premier Kosygin opened their Big Two summit in Glassboro New Jersey with a cordial handshake and remarks about Johnson becoming a grandfather. They moved to a college den to begin talks focusing on Middle East Vietnam nuclear spread and U.S.-Soviet relations, with discussions starting at 11 27 a.m. EDT.
PUTNAMVILLE Indiana State Farm Supt Albert Ellis sent 73 inmates to the State Prison at Michigan City after a disturbance. All had less than a year to serve and will finish their terms in maximum security. Six prisoners suffered minor buckshot wounds from warning shots. no serious injuries reported.
Two Thorntown teens aged 18 were arrested at Clark's Discount Store on Indiana 28 East and charged with shoplifting a selection of items valued at 14.24 dollars. In Clinton County Circuit Court Judge Everett N. Lucas placed Mary Jane Hickson and Sue Lynn McBane on probation for nine days with conditions and released them on bond of 500 dollars each.
