Tri Kappa to host annual ice cream social at Lebanon Memorial Park on Tuesday June 28 serving starts 5 p.m. with cakes, pies, ice cream and full dinner menu. Proceeds fund local charitable projects and Grace Neal Memorial Cookbook will be displayed. event features old costumes for Indiana Sesquicentennial celebration.
Frank Blubaugh of Punta Gorda Florida a former Thorntown resident will receive a 50 year Masonic pin from Siloam Lodge 609 Mechanicsburg at 7:30 tonight. Son Ronald Worshipful Master will present the pin. Blubaugh joined in 1916 and held multiple lodge and Scottish Rite duties. He is a former Boone County farmer and former county commissioner. He spends winters in Florida and returns in September. Public invited to the ceremony.
ammonia tank leak near Kirklin city edge prompted evacuations of several homes around 8 p.m. An unidentified man allegedly uncoupled a hose causing an explosion. Fire crews with air masks secured the scene, one firefighter was overcome and treated at a hospital. Most residents returned by 9:30 p.m. Fears of crop and livestock damage lingered.
Mrs James Mossman ends year as Mrs Boone County at the annual coronation ball to be staged outdoors on the east side of the Square in downtown Lebanon. The event starts at 9 30 p m with the Zircons providing music and coronation ceremonies at 10 30 p m. Admittance is charged. Local dignitaries to be honored include Dave Richey as Distinguished Service award winner and Paul Honan, Sr as Senior Citizen winner.
In Indianapolis a three year old, Sandra Long, died when a furnace explosion started a fire that swept through the family home early today. Parents Thomas Long and two other children escaped unharmed as firefighters worked the scene. Sandra's body was found beneath a bed.
A small strike at Triangle Asphalt Company began with pickets at the plant and job sites over wages. No trouble expected as other workers continue blacktop installation on State Road 421 from State Road 47 to Kirklin. Pickets involved include members of the Operating Engineers Union Terre Haute and Local 543 of the General Teamsters and Warehousemen's Union. Sheriff McConaha found no problems and ordered quiet at both picing sites. Triangle holds Memorial Park work in Lebanon and local street projects. no picketing there.
Police investigated three city crashes ten minutes apart with heavy damage and minor injuries. The worst crash involved Jeff C Young and Marvin Johns near the Dairy Queen on SR 39. Young rolled the Pontiac Tempest and was treated for a elbow laceration. No citations issued. Other crashes on Lebanon Street and Indianapolis Avenue caused moderate damage. Upton cited for failure to yield. Sheriff McConnah said oncoming traffic prevented Childress from passing.
A Boone Circuit Court jury will hear a land condemnation case filed March 6 1958 over 275 acres taken from a 2.35 acre tract that cut off Lebanon Motel access to the highway. Appraisers fixed losses at 80768.14 for Linn and Hastings with breakdowns for land, residue, and other damages. The site near I 65 Hall Baker Road South was boxed in by fences and earth mounds. Judge Charles F. Thompson to preside after a prior venue change was dropped amid over 50 cases tied to I 65 construction in 1958.
James P. Boyd, Dodd's former administrative assistant, testifies that the Connecticut senator misappropriated hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign funds and aided Chicago lobbyist Julius Klein. He says he stole materials from Dodd's files and gave them to columnist Jack Anderson. Boyd recounts concerns about Dodd's trips to West Germany and gratuities while facing possible misconduct allegations.
W Stephen Chapin was named manager of Pinnell Coombs Lumber Company replacing George Donaldson who has managed since 1954 Chapin will stay until July 1 then join Union Federal Savings and Loan as a field representative He came to Lebanon in 1964 after managing Acton Lumber and has worked in office support He is a North Central High School and Butler University alumnus Married to Jean with three children they reside at 918 Park Drive He is in the Air Force Reserve member of Kappa Sigma and Tabernacle Presbyterian Church planning to coach Little League He will be assisted in the office by Elbert Butch Redman of Thorntown Bookkeeper Loretta Thacker and yard foreman Roy Williams will remain in their posts
Greenfield Mayor Berry S Hurley who finished third at the Republican State convention for secretary of state renomination resigned Wednesday as Hancock County GOP chairman. He said the move frees his time to focus on his duties as mayor.
L. C. Slagle, 82, a Boone county veteran and former teacher, died at his Lebanon home early today. Mrs. Della B. Woodard, 77, a former Lebanon resident and Gold Star Mother, died Wednesday night at her Indianapolis home. Obituary page 4.
Boone County School Reorganization Committee advances a study on merging Union and Eagle townships into new districts. A public meeting at 8 p.m. Monday in the Boone Courthouse will discuss four plans including Eagle Union merger and Lebanon Union options, with a September 1 deadline to submit a plan for the fall ballot.
Lebanon native Richard Richey is appointed superintendent of Ballinger schools, effective July 1. A McMurry College and Lebanon High alumnus, he has coached and taught across Texas and Indiana, later serving as elementary principal and assistant superintendent in Ballinger. He and wife Eva Jane have two children.
WASHINGTON UPI two more Hoosiers are listed as Viet Nam war casualties. Army Sp 4 David G Hutchings son of Mrs Lois Hazel baker Anderson was listed as killed in action. Pfc James L Emmart 21 Gary died Monday of wounds received earlier.
