One week remains for clubs and organizations to enter floats or decorated cars for Lebanon’s Independence Day Parade on July 3. The absolute deadline is June 30. Parade marshal Harry Jameson urges prompt entries. The theme is Great Days in American History. Floats and cars judged in three categories with first and second prizes.
In Carmel Indiana a clash over teaching evolution pits Fundamentalist ministers against teachers and local clergy. Roy Love, new Carmel-Clay teacher, leads a revived biology curriculum including Darwinism while the school board keeps the course for next year.
Boone County plans for the 1965 Christmas Seal drive were outlined by Mrs. J A Tanselle executive secretary of the Boone County Tuberculosis association after a regional campaign conference in Indianapolis The Indiana TB association honored local leaders for a high 1964 increase and Frede Salomonsen displayed the 65 seals about Kernels of Life The Boone unit sponsored X rays for 1868 county residents and the meeting drew fifteen surrounding counties Harold F Turner led the drive Patrick Jennings spoke for the National Tuberculosis association
The Golden Age picnic for those 60 and over is set for Sunday June 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Memorial Park shelter house as part of Boone County Fourth of July events. J. E. Peer handles reservations at RR 6 Lebanon or 325-2722. Meat and drink provided, bring a covered dish and table service. A vesper service at 7 p.m. will follow the meal.
NEW YORK UPI The AMA House of Delegates at its 114th convention declined to endorse Surgeon General Luther L Terry's report linking smoking to lung cancer and other diseases. The reference committee recommended no full endorsement, noting prior AMA records and adopting the stance after mature consideration.
U S Navy planes conducted two bombing raids on Moc Chau army barracks 80 miles southwest of Hanoi as ground fighting killed more than 200 Viet Cong. The offensive included 52 sorties with Skyhawk jets and Corsair escorts, focusing on southern battlefield positions from Saigon to Dong Xoai and Da Nang, with Marines using tracking dogs in Da Nang.
Supporters and opponents of merging Eagle and Union Townships into one district prepare for a public hearing in Zionsville at 8 p.m. Monday hosted by the County Reorganization Committee. Officials warn success hinges on visible support. the outcome could end the merger plan.
In Bloomington Indiana Jill Grossman was elected state chairman of the Nationalist Party and Suzanne Hastings heads the Federalists. Nationalist officers include Karen Berkheiser Lebanon Sheri Brownlee Lebanon as secretary and Peggy Berndt Kokomo as treasurer. Federalists list Melinda Barga Winchester Kathy Nally Shelbyville and Deeg Smith Albion with treasurer.
INDIANAPOLIS UPI a attorney general ruled that a teacher cannot be denied a job solely because the spouse also works for the same school system. John J. Dillon cited a 1951 law barring employment discrimination based on marital status and rejected the idea that the law only covered single versus married status.
Great Bend and surrounding areas faced the Arkansas River flood as levees failed across rural Barton County. National Guardsmen and volunteers reinforced embankments while as many as 20,000 people were evacuated from homes in a multi state region. The river neared a crest atop 12 feet, with water spreading along U.S. Highway 56 and undermining bridges as dikes held the city.
Three deaths in Lake County today, including a race fatality, push Indiana 1965 highway deaths to 633. Edward Lott, Gary, died when his car hit a parked truck during a chase at 85 mph. the other racer fled the scene. Two cars head on near Crown Point killed George Oliver and Carl Johnson, injuring five. A separate two-truck crash near Wanatah took Lowell Strand. Kenny Norton unhurt. Another fatality occurred in Vincennes on U.S. 41 and a bicyclist died in Marion. A private-property incident killed Sandra Irvine when a truck backed over her in Fillmore.
The Indiana State Highway Commission approved a two year road program totaling 328 million dollars with 265.3 million for construction 47.2 million for right of way and 16.0 million for preliminary engineering. The plan aims to complete Interstate 74 and advance routes 65 94 69 70 64 and 465 while expanding U S 52 and Indiana 67 with dual lanes and truck lanes in key corridors. Officials note the package aligns with state law and Gov Branigin’s directive to be realistic within financing limits. In Petersburg John Jackson 63 was killed when a rifle discharged while he walked to fish at White River.
