A parolee from Indiana State Prison killed a young minister who tried to dissuade him from robbing a storekeeper and wife who had befriended him. The minister was shot in the back of the head during the struggle. The case highlights debates on convict reform and release standards.

Fiora A Lane 77 died Friday at Christen nursing home Indianapolis after a long residence in Doone county. Born July 4, 1878 in Boane County, she married James H Lane in 1898 at Shepherdsville. he died in 1947. She belonged to Indiana Regular Baptist and lived with a sister in Lebanon since 1947, survived by sons Franklin of Indianapolis and William of Crethersville.
In Indianapolis two dozen people fled Hagan's Cafeteria as a roof caved in during heavy rain. Five injured, two hospitalized. Francis Vogue, 47, pinned by a beam, treated at General Hospital for head injury and shock, in fair condition. Bertha Shepperd, 44, a waitress, led from the building in shock, listed in fair condition. John E. Carmardy, 43, of Lafayette, cut on arm and wrist crawling through a broken window, others tested for injuries at the scene.
In Norman Oklahoma a youth who had just turned 18 asked at the post office to register but was directed to the Selective Service office after lacking a slip. Ray Green, at the registered letter window, facilitated the referral.

Four members of Duff Farm Management Lebanon will attend the annual convention of the American Society of Farm Managers and Appraisers in Dayton. J Fred Duff will serve as vice president of the society while Floyd McDonald Wilbur Whitehead and Art Van Huss form the Lebanon delegation. The group will depart Sunday and return after the convention closes Wednesday.
Hamilton County Circuit Court seeks a permanent injunction against Clayton Martz and Alva and William Donald Carey over a junk yard and war salvage shop on land owned by the Careys. The suit alleges no prior zoning clearance was obtained before February 28, 1956, and seeks fines from $4 to $10 per day, not to exceed $100, for continued operation in violation of county zoning regulations.
A barn on George Walker's east of Pikes Crossing was destroyed Friday afternoon by lightning during a severe storm. Hay, a stored combine, and a nearby tractor were lost. A cow and calf believed trapped were later found safe. Mr and Mrs Walker work in Lebanon and no one was home when the blaze started. Loss to be covered largely by insurance.

Herman E Winkler announces Edward W Garrison as manager of the Winkler Training Institute. Garrison previously co owned Morganfield Plumbing and Heating Co and has served as dealer sales manager for heating and cooling equipment in central Kentucky. The expansion aims to handle growing dealer sales training and enrollment.
Frank L. Gardner 80, a former Jamestown resident and veterinarian, died at Johnson County Hospital in Franklin on Wednesday. A past master of Crawfordsville Masonic lodge, he had lived with daughter Mrs James Denny in Franklin. Survived by daughters Mrs Carol Winslow of Salem and Miles Gardner of Southport, and sister Mrs Emily Gardner. Funeral services were held Friday in Franklin.
A Rotary meeting at Alban Country Club aired highway needs across national state and local levels through a color sound film and narration. The film urged varied roads from rural byways to super highways and argued for self financing via savings on trucking costs insurance and time. Data showed car growth and widening miles traveled, Indiana lags in road funding, and expenditures by state in 1956.
Stephen Stafford son of Mrs Evelyn Stafford sold the most tickets at the Scout Fair held at the State Fair Grounds in May. A mother of three was killed when a car towing a boat to evacuate fifty Columbus residents struck her on the flooded east side. Airman 3 C Mynheer was rescued after swept downstream. civilian defense workers formed a chain to pull him from the water as crews evacuated about Hawcreek. The disaster followed heavy rains and rising streams. many evacuees could return home as waters receded.
Victor J. Stanwhite of Chicago, 42, held on reckless driving and driving without a license in a Boone County crash that sent a milk truck driver, David W. Jones of Thorntown, to Witham Hospital. Stanwhite faces federal charges for transporting a stolen car across state lines after being turned over to U.S. Marshals.
