A determined mediation effort is underway as Spain assists Latin American diplomats to prevent rising tensions and border trouble. The move aims to rush peace talks and deescalate potential clashes between the two nations.
Washington reports a cabinet meeting led to orders for General Wood Barry and Bell to mobilize militia to the Mexican border immediately. Congress amended a military resolution authorizing the use of the guard abroad, with funding to support families. Latin American diplomats and Spanish officials seek to avert war, while Carranza's government faces pressure in Mexico City and Washington.
The American Union Against Militaries acts to convene a joint American Mexican citizen conference at El Paso to delay hostilities mediation and border relief. Indiana guardsmen rushed to Ft Harrison as Mexican situation intensifies. Battery C of Lafayette led the early arrivals amid cheers from about ten thousand well wishers. By mail concentration orders many northern units faced delays while Terre Haute units were escorted to trains.
A large crowd gathered as plans for a patriotic parade in Lebanon moved to tonight after last night’s postponement. The procession, led by the city band, will include Old Soldiers, the My America League, and veterans from Civil and Spanish-American Wars. Speeches are scheduled on West Washington in front of the armory, with Rev. Homer Dale, Rev. W. P. McKinsey, E. 0. Rogers, Clayton Rosencrance, Captain L. C. Slagle, and possibly league speakers. New recruits Cecil Herrick George D. Goodwin and John H. Hooton have signed up, with Cris Bowman awaiting guardian approval.
