Verlin McClaine recalls 15 cent catsup and 10 cent peas as McClaine's Grocery in Advance marks a diamond anniversary during July. A month of daily drawings, appliance giveaways, and a July 31 diamond ring highlight the celebration honoring his mother.
Dr. Harold Sharp, superintendent of Eagle Union School in Boone County, testified that no black teachers have been turned away because none have applied. The case, in Indianapolis, centers on desegregation efforts and potential expansion to a larger consolidated district including Eagle Union. Sharp noted 80 percent of about 1,450 students are bused and there are no black students in the district.
Lebanon school board member Wendell Iddings, returning from a Virginia Beach seminar, urges gradual shift to year around schooling. He favors a 45-15 schedule with 45 days in class followed by 15 off, warns against full education packages, and stresses community needs, work issues, and public consensus. He notes outside youth activities deserve excused absences with makeup work and highlights parental financial benefits and ongoing study committee work.
Webb Wheel Division of American Steel and Pump in Greenville Tennessee begins partial production after taking over Marmon-Herrington plant at 205 South Indianapolis Avenue. Lloyd Olinger says full production and head hire are not yet defined, with two operators active and plans for two future shifts and local hires. The plant will make brake drums for semi trucks and trailers, operate as a warehouse, and improve grounds and appearance as initial steps.
