Cold War Keeps Pressure Despite Big Four Pact

Western diplomats warned the Cold War remains active despite the Paris Four Power conference. Military Honors For Howard Hedge At 2 P. M. Wednesday

Funeral services for Howard Hedge will be held at 2 00 p m Wednesday at the William D Scott funeral home with the Rev Carl H Barnett of the Providence Christian church Lebanon county in charge. Honorary pallbearers will be officials of the insurance companies where Hedge was an agent in Boone county. The American Legion post of Lebanon will provide military honors at Oak Hill cemetery.

No Uranium Lost At Oak Ridge

Oak Ridge June 21 AEC denial that any uranium for atomic bomb production was lost at its Oak Ridge installation. The commission said technical facts on source and fissile material at Oak Ridge have been reported to the joint congressional committee on atomic energy. The statement asserted it responded to press inquiries and noted Carbide and Carbon Chemicals Corp, Oak Ridge operators, stated no bomb uranium was lost.

Soil conservation field day near Lafayette draws farmers

Agricultural Agent Martins Caldwell announces a soil conservation field day at Throckmorton farm one mile south of Lafayette on Road 43. British Ship Bombed In Shanghai Raid

Nationalist warplanes bombed a British motor vessel Anchises on the Whangpoo near Shanghai injuring six of its 68 crew. The 4,281 ton ship was damaged amidships and its engine room flooded but refloated later. Foreign lines rerouted vessels as Britain protested and considered compensation.

Local TV Fan Receives Direct Dallas Program Signal

Ed Tanselie of 410 West Washington Street reports direct reception of a Dallas originated TV program with fair results on his large set. Previously he could only receive WBZTV Boston. Indianapolis telecast remains a requirement for wider nationwide pickup. Some fans note intermittent reception from Cincinnati and other cities within a 50 mile radius.

Nora West resigns from Boone County Selective Service where she has served since August. German Princess Weds Texas Man in Hechingen Ceremony

Princess Cecile of Prussia, a great granddaughter of Queen Victoria, wed Army Captain Clyde Harris of Amarillo, Texas, at Hohenzollern castle. Washington June 21 UP The House UnAmerican Activities Committee appears inclined to reject a Sons of the American Revolution bid for a formal inquiry into Communist propaganda in school textbooks. Three Republicans and two Democrats, a majority of the nine member panel, urged shelving the request while college leaders warned against academic ties and warned the move could echo Nazi book burnings. The panel endorsed asking educators to form an unimpeachable group to probe allegations of Communist content in textbooks.

Typhoon Strikes Area In Japan

A powerful typhoon swept from Okinawa across southern Kyushu causing at least 375 deaths and sinking numerous fishing boats and freighters. Jiji Press cited 372 fishermen feared dead. 55 more fishing craft destroyed on Shikoku. The American freighter Lightning with a cargo of jungle beasts drifted off Okinawa. Whitestown Lions Fish Fry Carnival Three Days This Week

The Whitestown Lions sponsor an annual fish fry and carnival on Thursday Friday and Saturday at the ball park west of the Whitestown school. The event includes the Wabash Valley show with concessions rides and a large farm display by Boone County dealers in tents. Television will be shown on the grounds with high school events featured. Voters Discuss Consolidation in Washington Township

Washington township residents debated consolidating with Clinton township and Dr Clement TN, county superintendent of schools. An election to decide the issue may be held, with five percent of last general election voters required to petition the trustee Frank eeecnae to conduct the rebetion. Only voters who cast ballots for the secretary of state would be eligible to vote, a provision justified by historic voting patterns.

Summer Heat Grips Northeast as Drought Persists

Summer arrived on schedule after the worst drought in 47 years hit eastern states. Forecasters offered little hope for New York and New England farmers as heat and dry conditions lingered. Johnson orders two carrier plan for atomic bombers

Defense Secretary Louis Johnson announced a project to convert two ships, the Essex and the Wasp, into aircraft carriers capable of carrying heavy bombers. The $80 million program funds will come from savings from canceling a Navy 65,000 ton super carrier. Johnson said modernization would allow heavy bombers, previously planned for the super carrier, to operate from these ships while maintaining strategic bombing reach.

Youth Killed In Gun Battle in Blackford County

Rollie Cook, 34, shot dead in a gun battle at his home as Sheriff Gerad Uptegraft and Police Chief John Lannis sustained injuries. Cook’s mother, Iva Cook, said he had just returned from a drinking spree and threatened neighbors, the prosecutor, and the sheriff before taking aim with an automatic rifle.
