Pennsylvania Railroad officials announced work on rail crossing repairs in Boone County starting today. Each crossing is expected to take about two days with northern Boone crossings worked later in the summer. Blockades will direct traffic to alternate routes while crews address listed crossings on the southern section and SR 39 south of Lebanon. Residents have complained the crossings are hazards to driving.
The Whitestown Board of Trustees passed an ordinance prohibiting keeping or harboring livestock within city limits. Col. Robert K. Custer announced in Indianapolis that Indiana's August draft quota is 468 men, part of a national call of 18,300. This compares with 355 in July and 430 in June, reflecting a steady adjustment in the selective service totals.
Leslie Pruitt a 17 year old Martinsville Morgan County teen was named Indiana Star Farmer of 1968 at the FFA state convention at Purdue University He is a star farmer finalist from the Martinsville area and manages 120 acres of corn 40 of soybeans 8 5 acres of wheat and 5 beef cows and calves with plans to enroll in agriculture at Vincennes University.
The House Judiciary Committee voted 29 to 6 for President Johnson's bill to outlaw mail order sales of all firearms including rifles and shotguns. The measure would restrict in state sales, set 21 as the minimum age for handguns, 18 for rifles and shotguns, and bar interstate ammunition shipments.
Adam Pritchard Dittemore 67 of Mechanicsburg dies from injuries suffered in a three car crash three weeks earlier on State Road 39 nine miles north of Lebanon. He was a lifelong farmer and Boone County highway toll 1968 rises to seven. Mrs Dittemore and the Baird spouse were among the injured. Road accident details include other drivers Leonard Baird Rudolph Wahl and Robert L Bailey. Funeral plans set at Russell and Hitch in Lebanon with interment in Hopewell Cemetery.
Twenty candidates declared for Indiana Democratic state tickets at the party convention in Indianapolis. Lt. Gov. Robert L. Rock and former House Speaker Richard Bodine led a bitter governor bid, with 11 of 15 nominations set for unopposed filers and several last minute entries adding drama to the convention at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseeum.
Peggy Stout wife of Lebanon police chief and Irene Strong of Zionsville vie for Mrs Boone County Contest on June 29. Stout, an assistant to the City Clerk Treasurer, is a Smile A While Club sponsor and active in 4-H and Little League. Strong, a bread and pie maker, 4-H leader, and Jaycees wife, is sponsored by the Zionsville Jaycees and has served in multiple church and community roles.
George S. White, a Boone native, died unexpectedly this morning at his home on Route 1 in Zionsville. The obituary appears on page 4.
