Lebanon to Host State wide Baton Twirling Contest

July 5 and 6 Lebanon will stage a state wide baton twirling contest and the Indiana Miss United States Twirling Association Pageant in conjunction with the July Fourth celebration week. Boone Postmaster Elected President of Indiana Chapter

Harold T. Conrad, Zionsville postmaster, was elected president of the Indiana Chapter of the National Association of Postmasters at the state convention in Indianapolis. He will assume duties after the national convention in Hawaii this fall. Conrad has served 20 years as postmaster at Zionsville and held many district and state roles, also editing the Hoosier Postmaster. The baton twirling contest and Miss Baton Twirling Beauty event are planned around July 4 with contestants statewide, judges from outside the county, and the winner to compete nationally later this summer in the South.

Traffic Toll Rises With Indiana Crash Deaths

An Indianapolis man, Phillip Zirkel, 23, died in a US 31 two car and truck crash near Greenwood. The incident raises Indiana 1963 traffic deaths to at least 530, with several other fatalities and injuries reported in nearby Crown Point, Valparaiso and Jeffersonville as more details emerged from a deadly Wednesday. Zirkel was en route to Bakalar Air Force Base for six months reserve training before tonight’s Lackland AFB flight.

Senate Finance Committee approves year extension of corporate tax

The Senate Finance Committee unanimously backed a bill to extend for one year the 52 percent corporate tax and current excises on beer liquor cigarettes and new autos. It refused to amend the House bill to allow passage before June 30 when levies expire, a loss of the higher taxes would cost the Treasury 4.2 billion annually. Chairman Harry F Byrd said he would bring the measure to Senate debate Monday.

July 4 Bicycle Race Entries Open In Boone County

Entries for the third annual Junior Chamber of Commerce seven mile bike race opened. Eligible youths aged 10 to 14 who reside in Boone County must provide their own bicycles and parental consent. The race starts at Elizaville at noon on July 4 with riders meeting at 11 am at the Citizens Bank lot for transport to the start. Prizes include a new $10 bicycle for the winner and smaller awards for runners up. Technical adviser is Harry McCray and project chair is Kenneth Harmon. Entries are available via the Jaycees or Lebanon Reporter office. The course runs from Elizaville toward Lebanon along Elizaville Road and North East Street to the Citizens Bank corner, drawing hundreds of spectators.

Boone County approves Lebanon Metropolitan School District plan

County plan authorizes Lebanon Center Worth and Perry Townships to form the Lebanon Metropolitan School District pending state approval. Jury Dismissed In Franklin Central Death Suit

City Truck Car Crash Injures Muncie Man

A city crash at the southeast edge of Lebanon on Indianapolis Avenue injured a Muncie man. Robert Lee Toughinbaugh, 38, was treated and released after his truck was struck when Mrs. Sarah Lou Garrett failed to stop at a Stop sign. Garrett was cited for disobeying a stop sign. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $725.

Toll road plans interchange linking Indiana toll road

The Indiana Toll Road Commission approved a 212 million interchange project across northern Indiana to connect with the Tri State Expressway linking Indiana with Michigan. Construction runs October to November 194, with an additional 4 million for an Indiana 51 outlet. The site sits 2,000 feet west of Lake Porter County line, and the Tri State Expressway will cross the toll road about 506 feet from the county line. Chairman David Cohen said the state should complete its portion by November 1. The plan was the consultant’s top safety choice among four submissions.
