Crawfordsville Ind June 20 The Chamber of Commerce announces official registration headquarters for trucking in Montgomery Boone and Fountain counties will close June 28 as required by Indiana code The $3 fee buys a metal rear tag and noncompliance risks a 500 dollar fine Several trucks have registered but many owners have not yet complied The registration agency is appointed for the three counties and operates under the state code.
President Franklin D Roosevelt was awarded Yale Universitys Doctor of Laws degree during the 233rd commencement in Woosley Hall. Yale President James Rowland Angell praised his brave leadership in peril while Conant and New York health commissioner John Levi Rice attended. The ceremony included roosevelt and his son James onstage, followed by an alumni luncheon and a motor procession with state officials.
Muncie Indiana June 20 veterans of the Civil War selected Lafayette as the 1935 encampment city by the Indiana Department of the Grand Army of the Republic. They invited the 1936 national encampment to Indianapolis and asked Indiana to appropriate $10000 for entertainment and expenses. Five candidates for Indiana G A R commandership were named J F McKinley W H Cooper W S Meade Frank May and Dr John Stone. The election will be held Thursday morning with 75 veterans attending.
Boone County schools will receive about $24,200 from the gross income tax on July 1, bringing total distributions under Indiana's replacement tax laws to $75,402.87 for the first year. The state cited a county property valuation of $27,781,600 and noted a 26 cent rise in the local property tax rate would have been needed to raise these funds.
Edward Middleton of Chicago and Washington, D.C. visited the Van Riper home in Indiana. Middleton heads government subsistent homesteads planning farm purchases, building small houses, and selling land back to workers in long-term lots. Indiana currently has one unit at Decatur.
Chicago on June 20 George Rogalski a 14 year old boy was sentenced to ten years in Joliet penitentiary for the kidnaping and death of Baby Dorette Zietlow aged 2 1/2. The jury of family men deliberated an hour before returning the verdict after he admitted luring the child to an abandoned ice house and removing her clothes.
In Frankfort Indiana on June 20 a bid of 3936 by the plaintiff secured the sale of 120 acres four miles west of Jefferson in Washington township after a protest gathering of about four hundred people from nearly a dozen counties. The sale was halted earlier by Farm Credit Bureau in Washington DC, but the decree will be held for six months and the defendant has a year to redeem. The second militant protest in recent months centered on the Otie Henthorn farm home four miles west of Jefferson and linked to a prior Boone county case.
