Two Scientists Die After Submarine Tragedy Near Key West
Four scientists were aboard a Smithsonian submersible when it entangled on a seafloor wreck 20 miles southeast of Key West. Two men, Al Stover and Clayton Link, were found dead after 31 hours trapped in the aft section. Survivors Archibald Menzies and Dr. Robert Meek were rescued in good condition. The elder Edwin A. Link, designer of the sub, faced distress over his son's death as officials and lawmakers called for safety reviews of research submarines. Representatives from Navy and Coast Guard coordinated the recovery as Sen. Hollings urged a full government inquiry.

Boone County rejects Heinold holding operation near SR 47 US 421
The Boone County Planning Board disapproved Heinold Hog Producers proposal to locate a holding operation on a 4 acre Zell property near the SR 47 and US 421 intersection. County commissioners upheld the board 2 to 1, with Rex Sprong and Owen Hansen backing the planning board while Robert Maze supported allowing the site to boost tax base. Heinold attorneys argued marketing benefits for eastern Boone and western Hamilton farmers, noting similar operations exist nearby. The decision appears to permanently halt this Zell site bid, though Heinold may pursue other Boone County locations.
