Thirteen homemakers compete for the Mrs. Boone County crown to reign at the July 4th Festival. The ceremony at Lebanon High School Auditorium on June 26 will reveal the winner, with 13 candidates including Mrs. Ronald Bartlett, Mrs. Clifford Belcher, and Mrs. Ronnie Boone.
Indiana Republican convention picks Roudebush for Senate and Salin for Secretary of State while signaling potential 1972 governor contenders. Bulen backed winners, Folz failed to secure key posts, Whitcomb deflects leadership fallout, and Mutz wins treasurer nomination as Snyder’s deputy eyed.
The House passes a postal reform bill by 359 to 24, creating the U.S. Postal Service as an independent agency with an 11 member commission. It includes an 8 percent pay raise for about 700,000 workers and grants collective bargaining rights and compulsory arbitration to postal unions. Senators Fannin and Thurmond threaten a filibuster over union shop provisions and may push a right to work amendment on the Senate floor.
A Lebanon man, 21, was sentenced by Zionsville Town Court Judge Roy Martin to 14 weekends in jail for assault and battery related to a May beating of a Zionsville teen. Accomplices Alan Hunnicutt and Bennie Wade Smith received fines and jail terms, with Smith’s sentence suspended for lack of involvement. The trio had pleaded guilty before defense was granted. The victim, 17, reported being beaten, robbed, and dumped near Zionsville after a car ride. In Dallas, Texas, Antonio Rodriguez, 27, received a 1500 year prison term for heroin sales to an undercover agent, the longest in Texas history.
Frankfort residents Jack and Dorothy Hankins sue the city for more than 300000 over alleged sewage lagoon pollution since 1969. They seek 375000 in damages for property depreciation and lost income on 141 acres plus 150000 for development impacts. The complaint adds J B Wilson & Associates as a third party binder and seeks defense assistance from the engineering firm. No jury trial date set.
Lebanon's Women's Division of the Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Decorated Bicycle Contest on June 29 at 2 30 p m. contestants meet in the east parking lot of the City Building and parade to the square for judging. Prizes include 5 00 for first, 2 50 for second and third, plus 1 00 in other prizes. Open to Boone County boys and girls ages seven through 13. Entries may ride in the July 4th Parade. Over 50 boys and girls joined the YMCA Playground program in its first week. Activities schedule for next week lists Stokes on Monday, Central on Wednesday, and Harney school on Friday. Supervisor Barbara Blackwell is assisted by Tim Hoge and the Hoffmans plus Patricia Blackwell. Open to all community youth aged 6 to 12, the free program offers basketball, softball, circle games, relays, and other supervised play from 9:30 a.m. onward each day.
Five people were killed across Indiana Thursday night and today, raising the state toll to at least 612 from 668 a year earlier. In Cromwell two men, Sam Parrish and Raymond Lively of Indianapolis, were struck while changing a tire on Indiana 5. In Madison County Steven W. Fields, 21, of Alexandria, died in a head on crash on Indiana 9. Steven Dixon, 25, of Lafayette, died on U S 52 bypass in West Lafayette. Jack Webb, 30, of West Lafayette, died after his motorcycle hit a bridge railing on Indiana 43 near Brookston.
Phnom Penh roads reopened today as Cambodian troops pledged to defend the capital with South Vietnamese help. In Saigon, Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky said Viet Cong and North Vietnamese would likely try to seize Phnom Penh but predicted the capital would not fall with combined forces ready to defend it.

McMullin 71 Route 5 Crawfordsville died Thursday morning at Culver Hospital, husband of Fern E. Swindler.
