Aerial raids devastate Japanese cities including Yokkaichi Hamamatsu and others as Allied bombers pound targets across the home islands. US reports say thousands of bombs dropped, with substantial destruction and mounting casualties as battles rage in Okinawa and surrounding fronts.
The OPA increased point values for lard and shortening to 12 cents per pound from 10 as of Saturday night, following a reduction in civilian shares for the third quarter of 1945. Butter remains at 24 points per pound and margarine at 12, with use by industrial users cut to align all consumers on the same basis.
Parke Beadie of the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce states that Lebanon has no jurisdiction over stop and go traffic signals at street intersections. Signals are maintained by the Indiana State Highway Commission. A recent signal issue was repaired and engineering bids are to be sought.
Mrs Ruth Smith of Lebaron reserves four special invitations to attend the official reception in Indianapolis on Wednesday honoring General Walther Bedell Smith chief of staff to Eisenhower. The event features a board of guests, a demonstration of honors, and remarks on Smith's World War II leadership.

Washington June 18 The Supreme Court votes 5 to 3 to cancel an order deporting Harry Bridges a coast labor leader to Australia as a Communist Bridges who has been an alien since 1920 appealed after Attorney General Biddle ordered his removal in 1942 The court reviews habeas corpus proceedings dating back to 1938 over Bridges links with Communist groups and charges that the order defies the Bill of Rights The decision centers on whether Bridges associations with Communist factions justify removal while notes the government argues Congress allowed the action and the courts must evaluate the evidence and subversive ties
Chungking reports that Chinese forces seized the treaty port of Wenchow at six a.m. after driving Japanese defenders across the Wu river. Japanese retreat toward Shanghai as Chinese expand control along the coast from Shanghai to Fooshow, abandoning the 400 mile coastal strip.
Mrs Charles Ben Allen accepted the Purple Heart awarded to her husband for wounds in Germany. He is reporting back to his old unit in Paris and expects to return to the United States.
Judge Frank Hutchinson urged Lebanon residents to back the Town Hall lecture series sponsored by the Lebanon chapter of the American Association of University Women for the 1945 46 season. He praised the effort to advance rural life and called for individual citizen support.
Soldiers began driving civilian trucks in Chicago after an independent union member ignored a government warning to return to work. Army guards monitored about 50 vehicles from Willie and Company as military police protected the idle fleets and distribution routes.
Bernard S Hooton son of Mrs Vinetta Hooton of 117 South East 1st street Lebanon Indiana earned the Bronze Star with the 113th Engineer Battalion of the Bath Cyclone Division. He participated in the invasion of Bataan under enemy fire and took part in the flank amphibious assault on Corregidor.
Barbara Anne Bailey has accepted a secretary position in the office of Paul W. Nicely county superintendent of schools and began her job today. She succeeds Mrs Aretta Cunningham who resigned about three weeks ago. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Irvin Bailey of Lebanon rural route two and was a Perry Central high school graduate in April.
London dispatch reports Col. Gen. Nikolai Berzarin, longtime Russian occupation commandant in Berlin, died in a motorcycle accident. Marshal Zhukov announced the death. Berzarin, an expert on Far East operations, had recently expressed interest in returning there.
United Nations Conference momentum aims to accelerate final work as major committee nears adjournment. Russia presses for narrower language on sovereignty while seeking compromises on charter provisions. Big Five seek limits on repeated debate as technical committee finishes key agenda items.
Moscow dispatch notes that ten of sixteen Polish underground leaders charged with terrorist acts against the Red Army pleaded guilty to all or part of the charges at a trial before a Soviet military tribunal. Gen Okulicki and twelve defendants admitted guilt. one group was accused of organizing armed bands in White Russia and western Ukraine and another of operating clandestine radio stations. The proceedings, held in a glittering Trade Union hall, drew foreign correspondents and diplomats.
F. Pender, Indiana Scout executive, returns from Mendhan New Jersey after attending a 30 day national training school for Scout leaders at Schiff Scout Reservation. Twenty two men from fourteen states enrolled and Pender was among graduates who received diplomas from Dr Elbert K Fretwell.
A Lebanon Chamber of Commerce canvass finds merchants oppose adding a two day holiday. They favor keeping the scheduled July fourth close and leaving the decision to individual shops. Some stores may stay closed Thursday to extend the holiday for employees.
Gen Henry H. Arnold announced at a Manila press conference that 2,100,000 tons of bombs would be hurled against Japan next year, three times the German peak, aiming to wipe Japan from the map by 1946 end if war lasts. He said B 29 numbers would double by fall, with 800 planes in a May raid and plans to bring every available bomber into the Pacific.
Brussels June 12 Belgians press for abdication as Leopold returns after five years of German captivity. The Liberal Party votes 48 to 3 endorsing a resolution urging the king to step down amid left wing threats of a general strike if he resumes the throne. Continued on Page Four.
Earl Hicks reported a 1941 Chrysler sedan stolen from 604 West North Street. The alarm spread via State Police radio from Lafayette. City police later found the car parked on Pear Street with the keys in it.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower returned to Washington to a hero’s welcome and told Congress that the ecombat soldier must help preserve the peace he is winning. He warned that peace problems require action and that grief for the dead can be eased only if such incidents do not recur. The joint session erupted in applause as Ike spoke, then he toured a day of tributes and a White House dinner before continuing homeward.
Washington reports the Supreme Court affirms a lower court decision that the Associated Press by laws restricting new members violate Federal Anti Trust laws. The ruling was 5 to 3. Also noted Senate subcommittee proposes boosting congressional salaries from 10009 to 15000 annually starting January 3, 1947. Camp Kilmer unit returns home from European theaters en route to furloughs before further combat for Japan.
