McKinley Nominated on First Ballot at St Louis Convention
The Republican convention in St Louis packed with 12,000 spectators named William McKinley as the presidential nominee on the first ballot with Morton viewed as running mate. Deliberations over the platform and credentials ran long as TeLler and other silver wing figures clashed with gold forces, while Lodge and Cannon praised the nomination and urged party unity. The hall erupted in cheers as McKinley was formally declared the nominee amid intense demonstrations and speeches by Foraker and Depew.
