Businessmen discuss cut rate selling and discount houses driving price wars across autos, appliances, and home goods. Courts uphold fair trade laws. automakers push franchises to stamp out bootleggers while manufacturers invest in automation to cut costs and keep prices low.
Partly cloudy and warm conditions persist with continued humidity. Tonight lows are expected near 66 to 72 while Friday highs reach 86 to 92 degrees.
Big wheels in Sundays Kid Fishin Derby face a wake up call after a truck of live catfish arrived early in Lebanon. Volunteers led by Ralph Stark and Charles Kistler stock the Conservation Club pit on East Noble Street for the Derby from 1 30 to 3 30 pm. Prizes reward top young anglers under 18 who supply their own tackle and follow supervision rules. An all day open house and wildlife exhibit accompany the event with prizes for largest fish and best overall catches.
Providence Christian Church schedules a Sunday children’s day program on June 20 featuring a reading by Leslie MeClam and Corn Sire Relace, recitations by Judy Bowman and others, songs by the choir, and a tableau titled A Rainbow of Joy highlighted by Betheline Kelsey and Genea Pennock Romney Sparks. The program includes prayers, scripture readings, and group performances by the Children’s Group and other participants.
Peterborough New Hampshire R H Mc Murtrie of Huntingburg is elected president of the American Guernsey Cattle Club. The national group serves over 40 000 purebred Guernsey breeders and McMurtrie succeeds R F Loree of Flerham Park New Jersey. He heads multiple companies including Huntingburg Furniture and Ferdinand Furniture, Woods Cellulose Products in Chattoochee Florida, and the Indiana Guernsey Breeders Association. He owns Fawn Lake Farm in Huntingburg.
May savings bonds sales in Boone County stood at 424,452 versus 445,369 the prior year, while statewide May sales reached 10,782,861 up from 10,422,037. The gain is 3.46 percent, the smallest monthly rise in five months, with 51 counties showing increases and farmers remaining strong supporters. Indiana aims to meet its annual targets with continued sales through 1954.
Maxwell appears in two courts today on separate charges. In City Court he faces assault related counts with a sentence possibly including a term at the State Penal Farm. In Boone County Circuit Court he pleads not guilty to grand larceny for an alleged $1212 theft from the Gausden elevator, with trial scheduled for later. Prosecutor Eugene Burns led the cases. defense counsel included Judge Ernest Stewart.

Boone County hosted a large Show and Sale with 150 entries statewide. Caldwell praised the event as the best Boone County has ever exhibited. Entries from Clinton and Union Townships included Vernon McCord Don Morton George Morton John Shoemaker Wes Beck and Donald Goodwin among others. The show was sponsored by Purdue University Agricultural Extension Service the state board of education and Indiana packing interests.
Bulletin reports challenger Charles weighed 185 pounds and champion Rocky Marriane 187 pounds for their heavyweight title bout tonight at Yankee Stadium.
Samuel Dunbar, about 25, was cut by flying glass from a bar door during a scuffle at the Vendome bar on 112 South Lebanon Street. He suffered severe lacerations to his right arm and left shoulder, was treated at Witham Hospital and released. Police say he was not intoxicated. bartender Kelley Gilliam attempted to eject him and no arrests were made.
Farmers on land with no wheat seeded for grain in 1952 1953 and 1954 may apply for a 1955 acreage allotment. Written applications must be sent to the county ASC committee by June 30 1954. Blank forms are available at the county ASC office for filing requests.
Si Williams former local resident died June 10 at the US Veterans Hospital San Fernandes Cal of lung cancer He was publisher of the Desert Star of Needles Cal and a longtime newspaperman He had been in failing health two years and seriously ill six months He lived in Lebanon after high school then served in World War I He published Lebanon Advertiser Covington Republican and Desert Star He leaves widow Myrtle Williams a daughter Rose Ann Cunningham a son Sylvan S a brother Levis D Williams and three grandchildren Funeral services were held Monday at the Needles Masonic Temple with Masonic rites and American Legion VFW burial at Riverview Cemetery Needles.
Guatemala appealed to Honduras on Wednesday night to prevent border incidents as anti Arbenz exiles prepare for a possible armed challenge. Chinchilla said well equipped troops and airlifted forces were moving toward the border and urged Honduras to seize arms.
