Lebanon Rotarians heard J. D. Adams of Columbia City, head of Indiana highway commission, outline a program to widen and straighten roads, cut right of way costs, and build trunk lines for trucks. He warned roads must evolve beyond early plans as fatalities rise on state road 52 between Indianapolis and Lebanon. The commission will fire any drinkers among staff and continue paying damages from widening projects.

Gunmen and police clash in Lafayette courthouse area
Three policemen and two gunmen were shot in a downtown Lafayette fight near the courthouse as officers questioned two gunmen. A 14 year old bystander was wounded, and two suspects and two officers may die. Police later arrested the wounded gunmen and a captured accomplice, Ruth Edgar, with a second suspect moved for questioning. A large arsenal and cash were seized during the incident.

Kidnapped Sheriff Freed After 500 Mile Ride
Bolivar Missouri June 17 Sheriff Jack Killingsworth Polk County was kidnapped by Charles Pretty Boy Floyd and accomplice Adam Ricchetti. He was driven 500 miles in a stolen car and released at Lee Summit near here at 11 last night after threats to kill if he spoke. Floyd and Ricchetti held others at bay with machine guns at the local garage during the abduction.

St Paul June 17 William Hamm a 39 year old millionaire brewer and son of a leading family was being held for a $100000 ransom by a veteran Northwest kidnapping gang. A taxi driver who delivered the note identified Verne Sankey as the man who hired him. Hamm, president and treasurer of Theodore Hamm Brewing Co., was seized likely on his way from office to home. Police delayed reporting to trap the gang. The kidnapping followed notes to Hamm’s associates and a postscript urging immediate payment.

Four Officers and Convict Slain by Gunmen at Union Station
Kansas City dispatch reports a brazen attack on Union Station Plaza as five gunmen engaged six officers in a fierce shootout. Four officers and Frank Nash, a notorious escaped convict, were killed. State Policeman Ernest J Richardson went to Glasgow to return two men for a charge of vehicle taking in connection with the theft of a Ford coupe owned by Dr. A. C. Spivey of Thorntown. Paul Jones and a man named Bartley were captured fleeing the wreck near Glasgow. the car was nearly demolished. Jones had prior trouble in Thorntown and a Doverite robbery case surfaced earlier.
