Boone County Red Cross opens a series of water safety and swimming courses at Leba non Seashore Pool. Beverly Otterman directs withKent Bennett assisting. Courses run June 20 to July 29 in multiple sessions from 9:15 to 12 with prerequisites for advanced levels. Call 482-3100 for info.
United Press International reports a Titan 3D rocket launched from Cape Kennedy delivering eight satellites for a military communications network. The mission aims to place seven communications satellites and a research moonlet into multiple orbits to provide a rapid, jam resistant link across Viet Nam forces, ships, and bases, with complex six hour orbital maneuvers culminating in a final circular path about 20,940 miles above the equator.
About 800 delegates from 465 volunteer departments attend the 3 day annual convention of the Indiana Volunteer Firemen's Association in Vincennes. Highlights include meetings equipment displays a water ball contest and a parade Saturday afternoon.
About 40 U S Marines on a barren hilltop repelled repeated attacks by a Communist force of about 400 near Chu Lai 350 miles north of Saigon. Only eight bullets left, reinforcements by helicopter at dawn, 32 guerrillas killed, and two Marines unwounded. Air strikes hit supply routes with 66 raids. one jet missing feared dead.
Two aircraft converged in mid air northwest of Columbia City Indiana killing three people. A DC3 from Axico Airlines crashed in a wooded area with two men aboard. the other plane, a Piper, carried only the pilot whose identity was listed as Satie Clelan of Chicago. Plane registrations and occupant names are provided by state police Whitley County investigators. Debris and emergency crews were dispatched to the scene seven miles north and two miles west of Columbia City. The second item notes Senator Edward V Long railing against six atom smasher site finalists as a possible taxpayer burden and risk to U S leadership in physics.
Indiana’s 150th statehood theme colors the July Fourth celebrations and the Mrs. Boone County queen contest with a sesquicentennial dress. Three new entrants join this year’s field: Marilyn Kincaid, Ellender Lee, and Donna McConnaha. Kincaid, mother of Lydia Jayne, 7, lives in Lebanon and works at Apple’s Shoe store. She’s active in First Presbyterian Church, Heart Fund drives, and Epsilon Sigma Alpha, with past leadership roles, and has served as Boone County REMC secretary for 13 years. Her hobbies include piano, ice skating, biking, music, dancing, sewing, and outdoor cooking. She emphasizes quick meals and marinated meats in her cooking. Sponsorship for Kincaid comes from the Community Club.
Almon Meridith, 48, an Indiana State Prison inmate serving a life term for second degree murder, escaped Tuesday night from the penal farm where he had been serving as a cook. Meridith, formerly of Mammoth Cave Kentucky, was convicted for the Jan 12 1963 shooting death of William C Bray a Sheridan bartender. He was captured shortly after the fatal shooting in a gun battle on East Market Street Indianapolis. A patrolman was wounded critically. Meridith was last seen wearing cook white clothing and authorities caution Boone and Hamilton counties to remain alert as he may be dangerous.
Mrs. Dora L. Powell died at age 74 at her Thorntown home. The obituary notes she died early today and her obituary appears on page 4.
A 68 year old Lebanon man, William Huffman, was injured at about 9 10 a m when his car entered Business Route 52 near the County Farm and was broadside by a southbound 1962 Ford driven by Danny Venis. Huffman was treated at Witham Hospital for facial lacerations and a possible concussion. Both cars were total losses. Venis was cited for improper registration. Huffman charges pending after investigation by Sheriff Jim McConnahan and Troopers Butch Smith and Art Allen. The accident was Boone County’s only in the last 24 hours.
United Press International reports a midsize rainfall in Indiana easing a drought since May. Many areas received over an inch with totals listed for cities such as Kokomo Frankfort Elwood Rochester Crawfordsville Covington Lafayette South Bend Fort Wayne Evansville Indianapolis Noblesville Peru Columbus Shoals Muncie Terre Haute and Warsaw. Showers fading in north but lingering south and east central into afternoon with fair weather forecast Friday and Saturday. Temperatures rose Wednesday from 74 to 87, with overnight lows mostly upper 50s north to upper 60s south.
Marshal Donald Rutherford issued a muzzling order for all dogs in Thorntown after two bite incidents on children and urged owners to comply with the annual rabies vaccination ordinance. He warned violators would be arrested and noted a probe into dog dumping. Lebanon logged 1.26 inches of rain last night with a thunderstorm from 8 p.m. to midnight. June surplus near .53 inches, while 2.58 inches fell in 48 hours, equating to about 648000 tons of water.
