Khrushchev Rejects Ban on Nuclear Tests Appeal

Moscow reports Premier Khrushchev rejected a Baner Party plea to halt nuclear tests. He warned of a new chain reaction of testing if the United States resumes atmospheric tests. He defended seismograph detection and dismissed on site inspections as espionage, saying NATO bears responsibility if tests resume. Khrushchev noted no basis for international control and urged Soviet-led solutions.

Worker killed in tank truck explosion in Indianapolis

Gene Alexander aged 24 of Indianapolis was killed Friday when a tank truck at Riley Tar and Chemical Co exploded while he and Oren Arthur were welding on the empty vehicle. Arthur was uninjured. a third man was involved.

East Germans Hold 2 Yanks

Berlin reports UPI states two American youths were detained by East German authorities after efforts to obtain false identity papers to flee to West Germany. The two, Robert F. Mann Jr. and a Stanford student, are sons of American residents. Officials offered little about charges or timing. Washington said no details available.

Bloodmobile collects 101 pints in Boone County

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile visit yielded 101 pints, short of the 125 pint quota. Eighty movers helped, with 34 walk in donors and 110 total donors. Kim Waggener thanked donors and volunteers. Paul Cox earned a three gallon pin. Next visit set for Monday August 20.

Two US Officers Killed in Viet Nam Convoy Ambush

In Viet Nam near Ben Cat north of Saigon a Viet Cong ambush killed two American officers, a captain and a first lieutenant serving with a U.S. advisory force. The convoy suffered heavy Vietnamese losses as well, with at least 15 killed. Rescue efforts were hampered by guerrilla road blocks.

Wisconsin Pilot Loses License For Drunken Flight

Washington report says a Wisconsin pilot, Belsha of Milwaukee, had his license revoked for drunken flying after a Kentland Indiana crash that damaged a power line. He and two passengers escaped serious injury and Belsha was fined for firing while intoxicated. he may appeal the two year license revocation to the Civil Aeronautics Board.

Indianapolis prosecutors say David Probstein, once a Washington witness, will be returned to face embezzlement and fraud charges. He vanished seven years ago, is under guard, and has ties to Teamster leader James R. Hoffa. A local businessman alleges he funded property purchases at tax sales.

Case Closed in Cadott Tea Car Crash Fatalities

UPI reports seven people died last weekend in a tea car collision near Cadott Wisconsin. District Attorney William OBrien declared the case closed noting both drivers are dead and no prosecution is possible. Indiana Savings Bonds sales for May totaled 10,621,465, up 1.1 percent from a year ago, with 49 of 92 counties reporting gains.

Miss Indiana Crowned in South Bend Pageant

A 1i year-old brunette from Mishawaka was crowned Miss Indiana in South Bend. The Indiana University sophomore will represent the state in the Miss Universe contest at Miami Beach later this summer. Runnerup was Barbara Jean Kaglen a 19 year-old from Danville. Pamela Garrison a Huntington junior was third.

One car crash hospitalizes three in Indiana

A one vehicle crash on US 52 near Road 334 sent three Indiana residents to hospitals. Stokley Morris, 65, of Indianapolis, suffered possible head injuries. Zilthia Hatch, 63, also from Indianapolis, endured severe lacerations and contusions. Margaret Randolph, 36, of North Capitol, had facial lacerations. The car left the roadway, struck a concrete abutment, and damage was around $500. State Trooper Richard Brown led the investigation with deputies Wayne Richardson and Den Sortor.

Troublesome SR 92 Ind intersection hit by two car crash

At about 10 pm a two car crash at the SR 92 and Ind intersection injured three people and destroyed two autos. Barthiomew 67 failed to stop at a stop sign crossing Ind 421 into a north bound car driven by Edmond A. Blish 27. Bernice Barthlomew 69 suffered nose and facial cuts and was taken to Wilhelm Hospital. Barthiomew was moved to the Medical Center in Indianapolis with serious injuries. A second city mishap on Lafayette Avenue left Orville Tom Hale 24 with a damaged 1961 Ford after apparently dozing at the wheel.
