June 16 report from UP describes a fatal fire at Hospice Sainte Cunegonde Catholic home for orphans and elderly residents. Firefighters battled flames that trapped residents on upper floors as nuns sacrificed to rescue others. Dozens perished or unaccounted as the six story building collapsed.
A 17 year old Queen of Egypt swam at Capri with King Farouk nearby, wearing a skin tight bathing suit and separate guards watching. The scene shows strict social norms as Egyptian guards kept distance and observers described the royal party enjoying a hot sun with locals nearby.
Chicago police captured Charles King after he fatally struck Gilbert Bacon and fatally harmed Helen Griffin with a housebrick and dragged Griffin screaming toward a hallway. King, 42, was tied to the death and attacked a friend and a bystander during an early dawn assault scene.
Ruth Rose, wife of race car driver Mauri Rose, was granted a divorce in St. Joseph circuit court on grounds of cruelty and ungovernable temper. She said he created restaurant scenes over food, repeatedly changing rules for her as a wife. They had been married three years and had three children.
Defending champion Ben Hogan surged in the National Open third round at Oakland Hills. He posted a 32 for the nine holes, bringing his total to 181 after 45 holes. No player had broken par over 18 holes in the event.
Boone county 4H members among 2500 delegates for a three day 4H Roundup at Purdue University beginning Monday. They were chosen by 4-H achievements and will join livestock dairy and demonstration teams from other counties for state honors.

Czechoslovakia informed the United States that two missing jet pilots one American Lt Luther G Roland and one Norwegian Lt Bjorn Johansen landed safely near Kbely northeast of Prague on June 8. The pilots are detained as Czech authorities investigate the circumstances of the incident and releases are not yet decided.
Photographer Joseph Locke aged 40 was bumped by the folding arm of a motor driven starting gate at Northville Downs last night. He recovered after being stopped by the inside rail and was nursing a head bump today.
The Boone County Chapter American Red Cross opens water safety sessions at Lebanon Seashore pool starting June 25 with Miss Mary Frances McKenzie in charge. Junior lifeguard courses for ages 12 to 15 run 9 am daily through the 14 hour course, while Senior Lifesaving is for 18 plus. Registrations close June 20 for junior and June 30 for all classes, with regular swimming starting July 9 and ongoing training benefitting county youth and promoting self reliance.
Six year old Joseph Zaidarsic, who called Mr. and Mrs. E. V. McCue Dad and Mommie, was denied adoption by relatives from Minnesota and granted permanent residence with his foster parents. Judge O Q Claflin cited the boy’s wishes and his long relationship with the McCues, noting the late father died in Okinawa. The boy will remain with the McCues, who have cared for him since his mother vanished January 30, 1949.
Rotarians attended a noon session at Alen Country Club where Tony Lobraico described Europe’s chaos. He contrasted east Berlin rationing with west abundance, noted a monument to fallen Russian soldiers built in the east sector, and praised Paris cuisine and Spanish poverty during his travels. Guests included Robert Cross, Harry McCullough, Charles Rokar, and Dr Hk Maelaka.
Boone County pasture field day will be held on the Noble Beck farm east of Whitestown next Thursday afternoon June 21 under the Boone County Crops Extension Committee. County Agent Munns Caldwell says the effort aims to show how pasture can double its production with proper treatment and reduce feed costs for dairy and meat animals. Beck will explain how his land yields protein rich feed, noting eight years ago oats were seven bushels, wheat nine, corn 15, and five acres of pasture would barely feed one cow.
William Schricker, 73, brother of Governor Schricker, died at his North Judson home. Funeral services were tentatively set for Monday. The governor cancelled plans to attend the Midwest Governors Conference in Omaha next week. Schricker was to be toastmaster at a dinner meeting.

Otto Whitaker of the Hall-Neal Furnace Company in Indianapolis has been named one of the nation’s top 10 Victor dealers for 1950. He serves on the factory dealers advisory board and attended the Indianapolis meeting with Man Bowen.
Miss Mary Beeman longtime home economics professor at Ball State Teachers College announces retirement effective June 1. Born in Fairview and raised in Marion township she taught Stokes School third grade and later led the department. She holds a Bradley University degree, a Columbia University master’s, studied at Chicago and New York universities, joined Ball State in 1929 and traveled widely. She attended White House conferences in 1938 and 1948 and is listed in Who’s Who in American Women and Who’s Who in Education.

The Local Union of Oil Workers from Rock Island Refineries held its annual banquet at Zionsville Eagles Lodge Hall with 52 couples attending. Dinner was prepared by the Women's Auxiliary and served by the Eagles Aerie’s men. Onstage entertainment included Jerry Furman as master of ceremonies, Sugar Burton on accordion, and Gloria Short, followed by a magic show and performances by the Belmont Brothers jugglers and Jim Boatman with John McGinnis supplying dance music.
