A joint American and Cuban force routed Spaniards in a fierce clash, killing forty enemy troops. The camp was captured with many wounded reported, and the outcome favored the attacking units amid heavy fighting.
United States Marines under Lt Col Huntington launched a force from Guantanamo Bay and routed a Spanish guerrilla camp five miles from the American position. About 49 Spaniards were killed, 15 bodies found, and 1 American and 2 Cubans were wounded. The attack followed a grueling march and heavy fire, with a captured camp containing a vital well.
The dynamite cruiser Vesuvius fired two hundred pounds of guncotton on the hill below a Morro battery near El Morro while New Orleans engaged fortifications off Santiago de Cuba on June 14. The debate, lasting days, highlighted the issue's commercial and strategic significance and sparked concerns over policy shifts from Monroe doctrine and potential colonization. Republicans largely supported annexation with a few dissenters. Democrats opposed. The final tally reflected divisions within and across parties.
The state board of public works in Columbus authorized W. G. Wagenbals of Dayton to conduct a three year test using electricity as motive power on the Mont and Erie canal under the April 1898 act. If successful, a three year franchise for that canal is to be granted, subject to the governor's approval.
