J. F. McFarland 86 died Thursday of a heart attack at Robert Long Hospital Indianapolis after residence at Boore County Home since 1954. Born January 10, 1870 in Indiana, he was a painter by trade and longtime Lebanon resident. Funeral Saturday at Russell and Hitch funeral home at 2 p.m. Burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 7 p.m. tonight.

President Eisenhower made his best progress yet at the end of four weeks in Walter Reed Hospital. He handled much White House business, signing 21 documents, while White House press secretary James Hagerty said no staffer has been told his political plans. Mrs Pon Stewart seeks re-election as Auxiliary trustee.
Two persons were injured in a collision at the intersection of State Roads 32 and U.S. 421 in eastern Boone County about 4:25 p.m. yesterday. Gilbert E. Stokes, 34, Frankfort, sustained face cuts and possible internal injuries and was taken to Witham Hospital in fair condition. Bessie Moore, 52, Tipton Route 2, was treated for a bruised knee and released. Moore was eastbound on State Road 32. Stokes was northbound on U.S. 421 and swerved to avoid the crash. The Moore car struck the side of Stokes’s Chrysler, sending both vehicles down an embankment. Stokes’s car was a total loss and Moore’s damage totaled $300. State Police planned charges of failure to yield right of way against Moore. Also noted was the good condition of Ralph Hartson, 18, Creston, following an auto-truck collision on U.S. 52 earlier Thursday.
Indianapolis reports New Brunswick Citizens Telephone Co. serving 187 customers in Boone County. Public Service Commission grants a $1,590 annual rate. order sets a flat $8.79 for four months for residential service with a $3 extension charge.
WINCHESTER Kentucky tax official Jim Snowden recalls a 1906 bicycle sale to George Rose of Indianapolis for six dollars. Rose paid the remaining two dollars Thursday, ending a half century debt Snowden had forgotten.

John T Gojack 39 of Fort Wayne Indiana, labor union leader, was sentenced by US District Judge David A Pine to nine months in jail and fined 200 dollars for contempt of Congress. He had been convicted May 3 on six counts of contempt for refusing to answer questions before a House Un American Activities subcommittee on February 28 and March 1 1955. He sought a suspended sentence but was denied. Gojack remains free on bond pending appeal.
Funeral services for Ralph Jackson 57 Jolietville Route 1 will be Sunday at 2 pm at Jolietville Methodist church. He died after a Wednesday accident in South Bend when his vehicle struck a bar at a street crossing. Survivors include widow Kathryn Stevens Jackson two daughters Mrs Richard Schover and Norma Teekson two sisters Mrs Mabel Ramsey and Mrs Ruby Howard, plus an uncle Ee Scott. Friends may call at McMal en funeral home after 7 pm. Burial at Little Sats Cemetery.

Fisher Worse, 23, Sheridan, fined 50 dollars by Special Judge Robert Coats after a Marion County Criminal Court jury found him guilty of reckless driving following 74 hours of deliberation. The defendant, described as a farmer and factory worker, faced charges tied to the August 1954 death of Della C. Davidson, 73, of Zionsville, in a three car collision at US 42 and State Road 100.
New York subway service resumed as workers returned after the nine hour strike that paralyzed transit.
