A stark report reveals dire conditions in women’s prisons in Indiana, with solitary-like isolation, suspended mail, and lack of vocational training. The governor shut doorways at the simont Girls School, repurposed as storage, and promoted reforms after exposing punitive practices and sparse educational programs.
The Eagles lodge of Lebanon will send eight delegates Thursday to the annual Eagles State Convention at Evansville. The Degree team will also go to compete for its fifth State Ritualistic Team championship. The Lebanon team is invited as the Honor Team to initiate the State class of candidates Thursday at 8 p.m. The winner represents Indiana in the Nations Degree team contest at the Grand Aerie national in July. The convention runs Thursday through Saturday. Don Stewart, captain of the Degree Team and State Outside Guard, seeks the office of State Inside Guard. Attending are Leslie Watts, Harris Gullion, Orville Guilion, Delbert Davis, Ray Roberts, Walter Isenhour, and Wes Wheat, with Mesdames Wheat and Davis. Stewart travels Wednesday with Mrs. Stewart for the Auxiliary meeting in Evansville.
Mrs Sarah Annetta Bohannon 73 wife of William N Bohannon died this morning at her Whitestown home after a day long illness She was born April 27 1882 in Dacatur county daughter of James A Updike and Celestine Fellinger She survived by husband two sons Earl Eugene Bohannon James William Bohannon a daughter Juanita C Smith Ardra Dulin a step daughter Velma Gardner three brothers William Milton Updike Virgil Harris one step brother Henry Updike seven grandchildren and other relatives Funeral services Friday at 1 30 pm at Russell Hitch funeral home Rev Wilbur Sharp officiating with burial at Mrs Run cemetery Friends may call after 7 pm tonight

Local police received the first Civil Defense alert at 11 16 am from the State CD office. Boone County Civilian Defense chairman Ma H L Ransdell was notified. Additional alerts were planned with hundreds of evacuees expected to arrive at the Boone County Courthouse by 5 pm and Red Cross staff tasked with registering them.
Two Elkhart youths aged 16 and 18 escaped from the city jail system and burglarized the North Side sporting goods store. Police pursued them into Michigan after a wreck near Edwardsburg, where they were captured within minutes. Harold Artley suffered head and face cuts. Edward Friend, a parolee, was unhurt. Police said shots were fired from the fleeing car.
In Brockton Massachusetts a mother of two admitted murdering three year old Michael Baldwin by holding his head under water in a bathtub after a play scene. Police say she wrote a note about the body to a sister-in-law and gave it to a taxi driver for delivery.
The Lebanon Utilities board seeks a new overhead tank costing 50 to 70 thousand dollars to replace the old stand pipe at Elm and Evans. Bids on a different spheroid tank will be sought. the site near the football field may be used if chosen. Completion is expected about seven months after contracts are let.
Laura May Butler 83 died at 228 East Green Street after a four day illness. Born March 8 1872 in Mechancisburg she was daughter of Eli and Mary Elder. Widow of Harry Butler died 1916. She leaves three daughters Georgia Wagoner Mary Nease Eva Douglas a niece and nephew plus 11 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. Last rites Thursday 2:30 p.m. at Russell Hitch funeral home with Rev Kenneth Mitchener. burial Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. today.
Rey Russell Richardson of Mor an will begin duties as pastor at Whitestown Methodist Church this Sunday following his appointment by Bishop Raines at the Northwest Indiana Conference. He and his wife plan to move into the Whitestown parsonage Thursday. Richardson, a Mt Vernon native, earned a B A from Asbury College and an BS from Purdue, with a Bachelor of Divinity from Garrett Biblical Institute and seminary studies at Hartford Theological Seminary.
Ulen Country Club golf pro Jimmy Scott will address the Lebanon Kiwanis Club at their noon meeting at the Country Club, sharing tips on improving members’ golf games.
In Little Rock Traffic Court a dead man, Doyle E. Gullick, was fined 51 dollars and given a one day suspended sentence for drunken driving. Court officials later said they did not know Gullick had died Saturday in a car train crash. A bondsman involved noted the case had been called originally on May 23 and Gullick was fined but allowed to go free with time to pay. the payment was turned over to the court three days after his death.
Rocco Iacobelli, retiring commander of the Lebanon American Legion post, was elected Chef de Gare of Lebanon Voiture 1318 in the annual Prominade. James Iverson and others named to offices include Bob Wiseheart, Kip Parr, Paul Dale, Bert Hoover, Paul McGingley, Otto Flanagan, and five trustees led by John Coons. Delegates to the Grande Promenade are Charles Wheeler Sr and Rocco, plus Andy Houk.
Robert Edwards, Lebanon Utilities office manager, resigns to become Lebanon representative for Acacia Life Insurance. He joined the Utilities in 1951 after returning from Marine service and today begins a stated training course at Pur ue.
Argentine sources report two Roman Catholic leaders, Rt Rev Manuel Tato and Rt Rev Roman Pablo Noves, expelled amid postweekend disorders. They were escorted to Ezeiza Airport and flown to Rome, after police questioned them on clashes that injured over twenty. The government invoked a colonial law to dismiss priests and asserted the raids targeted clergy inciting unrest.
A Los Angeles Challenger train derailed 6 miles east of Fort Morgan after floodwaters washed out 200 feet of track. One death, at least five serious injuries, and many additional injuries were reported as crews rescued passengers from derailed coaches. The train, en route from Chicago to Los Angeles, was detoured due to high water.
James Whitehead reported to city police at 11 50 p m last night that his father Wilbur W Whitehead s car was taken from the 500 block on North Meridian Street where it had been parked The car was later recovered by police near the Armory.
