Witness accounts reveal overcrowded dormitories with no ventilation and cold floors. Prisoners endure inadequate sanitation, limited baths, and forced labor while reports describe sexual assault, drug use, and corruption among guards.
The Lebanon City Council reappointed Delue Akerman to a three year term on the Lebanon School Board effective August 1 and approved two emergency ordinances. Akerman, a local druggist and current board president, was nominated by Councilman Leo Richman as the board engages in a building program. Ordinance No. 55 bans parking in alleys except for unloading and on lawns between sidewalk and curb. Ordinance No. 56 requires City Building Inspector approval for plumbing and wiring and bars Utilities from service connections without written inspector approval. City Attorney Joss Hallingsworth said the ordinances ensure plumbing and wiring meet standards to prevent health and fire hazards, with no penalties in the new ordinance. Mrs. Fred Roe presented a petition to resurface an alley, which Mayor H. L. Ransdell confirmed is in the resurfacing plan.
Miss Ahna Muktepaveis, a Butler University graduate with a bachelor’s in science, starts work as a pharmacist at Akerman's drug store in Lebanon. A former WFBM TV candidate for queen, she plans weekend visits to Indianapolis with her parents and sister Veronika. the Muktepavels originally hail from Latvia and fled Livani during Russian occupation in 1944.
Indiana GM plants largely resumed operations after a Detroit wage deal. About 3,200 workers at the Indianapolis Chevrolet Commercial Body plant remained Idle, while 30,000 other GM workers returned. The strike and wage plan negotiations focus on unemployment compensation and state law compatibility ahead of a possible special session.
Lebanon civic leaders meet at the Boys' club to review plans for a July 4 celebration. committee chairmen urged progress on floats, rides at Memorial Park, fireworks coordinated by County Surveyor Bob Hutchinson, National Guard traffic safety, and Red Cross first aid staffing. Subscriptions toward the $1,250 budget reach $357.54.

Mrs James Goldsborough of this city will hold an exhibit of water colors at the L and W Men’s Store from Wednesday through Saturday. Most works depict Yarmus types of scenery including the old McCann farm home near State Road 32 and the old covered bridge west of US 52 in Marion county. One piece is a still life. others are framed or matted. Goldsborough has studied at the University of Houston and with George J. Mess. She is conducting a summer outdoor class for children and is active in Youth Activities projects.
The four week program of Tr Kappa sorority and Youth Activities at Memorial Park opens with activities for elementary and junior high students. Sixty youngsters participate daily as Junior Leaders provide instruction and aid. Puppets, crafts, games, and stories are featured with demonstrations planned. attendance averages over five dollars daily, and weather delays have moved the schedule to the second week.
Indiana state records show 48 percent more fatal autotrain collisions in the first five and a half months than last year. State Police Supt. Frank A Jessup said seven lives were lost in 21 accidents, up from 33 deaths a year ago, with four fatal crashes in Marion County and at Anderson over the recent weekend. Drivers ignore rail crossings as hazards despite a law requiring trucks carrying flammable materials to stop at crossings, which has cut such collisions.
Boone County voters will decide June 25 if the wheat marketing quota program will apply to the 1946 crop. Chairman Warner F. Saylor notes arrangements for a county referendum at the ASC Office. Farm allotments reflect national wheat acreage limits while price support ranges from 2.2 dollars to parity, with penalties for excess production. Only farms under allotment qualify for supports. two-thirds voting in favor required for operation in 1956.
John W. Donaison, chairman of the Red Cross 1954 Fund and Membership Drive, received an Award of Merit from Eastern Area headquarters at the Red Cross Boone County chapter meeting Monday night. Chapter chairman Ned Buat presided, with funds and membership plans discussed, and training updates noted for water safety aides and first aid instructors.
Lebanon Girl Scout Troop No 1 keeps selling Ameri can flags for homes and businesses. A second shipment of 50 flag kits arrived, with 385 cotton flags, poles, and brackets. Orders are being taken by adult leaders. Scouts will deliver flags and kits as soon as orders are confirmed.
In Buenos Aires a broad labor rally led by Peronists staged a nine-day loyalty strike to back President Peron amid clashes and demonstrations targeting the Catholic Church. Police reported hundreds detained as rioting spread near Episcopal Palace and Metropolitan Cathedral. the General Federation of Labor urged calm.
Indian diplomat Krishna Menon met with President Eisenhower for 45 minutes and planned to meet Secretary Dulles later. He said the release of four airmen opened the door to freedom for others held in Peiping and urged conciliatory gestures toward China. Mehta accompanied Menon. report to continue on page 4.
A group from Lebanon Jaycees will travel to Zionsville Friday evening for the Charter banquet marking the new Zionsville chapter of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. The event begins at 7 pm with installation of new officers including Jim Waggener as president succeeding Kort Smith.
The Boone County Conservation League plans a kids fishin derby this Sunday with registration at the non club house by 1 pm. A safety pit will be supervised by adults while children land the fish themselves to qualify for prizes donated by Lebanon merchants. Bass under ten inches must be returned. panfish of any size may be kept due to overstocking. Special prize for first fish. prizes for most fish, heaviest string, and smallest panfish.
