June 14 Kingston report details a violent factional fight within the Auto Workers Union, with John L Lewis and Homer Martin at odds over mutism policy. Leaders clash, members defect, and a chaotic struggle to unify the organization ensues as factions threaten to tear it apart.
A blaze broke out during the annual state convention injuring a 14 year old and a 7 month old, as a man and woman tried to rescue them. Thompson, a resident of mee Oklahoma, died in the fire while attempting to save his sons after a struggle that saw them flee back into the flames.
Lafayette Indiana June 14 More than 1600 boys and girls township and county winners in 4-H clubs today attended the twentieth annual club roundup at Purdue University. Miss Martha Jean Craig of De Soto won honors identifying trees and shrubs by correctly naming 19 of 30 specimens. James Lutse and David Duckworth of Franklin formed the winning farm building roofing team with Elkhart and Wayne counties placing second and third.
Miami Florida June 14 Frank Lin Pierce McCall the confessed kidnap slayer of late Jimmy Cash pleaded guilty to kidnapping and not guilty to murder when arraigned before Circuit Judge HF Atkinson. The judge set tomorrow as a tentative date for trial with options for appointed counsel and possible trial by jury or without. The court could hear kidnapping evidence first then sentence, or proceed with murder trial.
Indianapolis detectives disclosed a jewelry theft worth 14700 at William A. Zumpfe’s home the previous weekend. Chief John Sullivan of Chicago seeks full details and warrants as Chicago police reportedly hold a suspect in the case.
Lake Forest items report six year old Seleta Loleta had hoped for a summer visit from Mrs Roosevelt. A letter spoiled the plans, saying the First Lady cannot come after all. The girl’s mother reads the note on White House stationery with disappointment.
San Francisco reports the death by suicide of Dr. Willem Campbell age 76, former president of Eimerity University and ex-director of Lick observatories. He leaped from his apartment window after dressing, leaving a note citing despondency over ill health. Wife was asleep when he fell to the ground below. Investigating officers described the fall from four floors and the fatal act conducted in the early morning.
Los Angeles June 11 Thirty five officers and men aboard the Canadian freighter Angie were rescued from a raging fire in her holds by the Itasca and a US Coast Guard cutter near the Santa Barbara Islands. The Angie reached Los Angeles harbor under her own power with smoke still pouring from the hold and no injuries reported.
Mrs Melba Stemfire, a 108 pound widow serving as a truck driver for the WPA, says driving a truck is a snap compared with housework. She won her late husband's job to support her four year old daughter Paula, handles trips with skill, cooks dinner after work, and plans to expand to a fleet. County officials say as long as her work is satisfactory she may continue.

Lebanon City Council adopted an ordinance expanding the sanitary district scope to require all dwellings, businesses, boarding and lodging houses, eating places, tenements, shops, factories, public halls and other public buildings to install sanitary toilets. If within 150 feet of sanitary sewers, connect to the sewer. if farther, provide sanitary privies meeting state health standards. The measure mirrors the State Board of Health rules and takes effect July 1, 1939. The occupant or owner must install and maintain toilets accordingly.
Secretary of War Woodring approved a nationwide rivers and harbors improvement program costing 61.7 million dollars. The plan includes 32.7 million for New York projects and 28.99 million for maintenance of prior works. Funds come from the War Department appropriation bill for the fiscal year approved by President Roosevelt.

Valparaiso Indiana June 14 a modern pied piper of Hamlin is Dr Harry V Fuller former head of the science department of Valparaiso University who keeps a radio on day and night in his poultry shed to prevent rats from eating the baby turkeys He says the turkeys seem to thrive on music speeches and drama and voices from the radio kept away rats which last year killed 400 young turkeys.

Chief Smith had taken a leave last September for illness and Patrolman Charlie underwent an operation a few weeks ago.
Rockport Indiana June 14 tropical fever diagnosed by local physicians as a mosquito borne illness claimed the life of Leslie Lee Davis aged 18 months, son of Mr and Mrs Lennise Davis, five miles south of Rockport. Another Davis child Charles Bernard four died last week, while Lennie Jr seven and James sixteen remain critically ill.

Young people currently using the courts during the day will relinquish them in the evening to employed players, unless no one employed wants to play, in which case the youths may continue to use the courts.

Indianapolis June figures show more than 1 million dollars in unemployment compensation benefits paid in Indiana since April. Clarence A. Jackson, director, said 89,352 checks totaling over 60,000 were written last weekend, with 18,654 checks average 4.70 daily. Partial benefits, for workers earning under weekly benefits, push average checks to 11.18, and over 26,000 claims have been filed for partial benefits as permitted by Indiana law with a maximum weekly benefit of 15 dollars.
