A massive explosion at a Reinsdorf munitions factory near Wittenberg Saxony killed hundreds, injured many, and reduced the area to ruins. Red Cross workers and ambulances rushed to the scene as officials sought official reports amid chaotic communication and guarded townsfolk.
Eight carrier boys in the Lebanon district win The Indianapolis News and Lebanon Daily Reporter subscription contest and will depart June 23 by special train with other winners for Washington D C. They will return home Thursday, June 27. Winners include Albert Graham John Chambers Meredith Bratton Junior Clemenson Rex Robison Robert Crear Ralph Hughes and Maurice Allen Hughes of Lebanon and Brownsbury. They will tour important buildings in the capital and take sightseers to nearby sites.
Washington reports an 18 hour 15 minute Senate filibuster led by Huey P Long against a new voluntary NRA extension bill. The final vote 41 to 13 occurred about 6:15 am. Long drew support from Pat McCarran Sehall and others. The record remained shy of Bob LaFollette’s 18 hours 23 minutes.
Fifteen laborers from federal relief projects were hospitalized in serious condition after eating tainted beef tongue sandwiches served last night at a shelter on North West street. Over 100 workers at three construction sites fell ill, with many vomiting and some coughing up blood. Police, ambulances, and private cars aided transport to City Hospital as an emergency infirmary treated the afflicted.

The 1935 state police board met for the first time and elected Major Claude Crocks of Lebanon as president and Albert Raab of Indianapolis as secretary. Members Carl N. Gray of Petersburg Ian H. Norton of Gary and Donald Stivers, the new state police superintendent, attended. The board adjourned for lunch and planned to reconvene to formulate policy.

Indianapolis authorities released a farm hand after ballistic tests and other evidence pointed to Minnie Burns 58 as the killer of Jerome Burns 63 on May 22 and to the death by own action. Dr Arbuckle the coroner called it murder death by own action with the revolver under Mrs Burns.

Hockersmith twenty one of near New Ross was sentenced to six months on the estate penal farm and fined twenty four dollars plus costs by Judge John W. Hornaday If the fine is unpaid after the six month term he faces an additional forty days at the penal institution Deputy Sheriff Wilbur Smail took Hockersmith to the farm.

Washington June 18 A deadlock between House and Senate over the new NRA extension bill was broken after a White House meeting with President Roosevelt and House leaders. O Connor announced the House would likely accept the Borah amendment to remove anti trust exemptions, despite earlier objections. The Senate passed the extension with major provisions including an April 1, 1936 deadline and limits on price fixing, though Long’s filibuster delayed final action until a vote. The bill advanced with a 4 to 13 party split, as leaders moved to refer the measure to committees and schedule a vote.
