Frankfort Storm Damage Could Reach Half a Million
A severe thunderstorm with tennis ball size hail ripped through Frankfort and Rossville causing heavy damage. Frankfort High School sustained major harm including a torn roof and shattered windows, with minstrel and auditorium damage. Sheriff Robert Kelley reported no injuries as windows and stock were damaged across town.

Seven children missing after car plunges into Mississippi River
A car carrying nine children and a mother drove down a steep hill into the Mississippi River near Chester Illinois. Debbie Canady 12 and Tammy Clark 6 were recovered from the submerged vehicle. The search for Becky Clark 10 Norma Clark 11 Cindy Clark 9 Robbin Phillips 11 and Becky Roberts 6 continued after dusk. The driver Mrs Charles Clark and two rescued children were taken to Memorial Hospital in Chester in critical and fair condition. Police blamed brake failure as the car swung into the river.

Two pedestrians hurt in separate crashes within hours
Two pedestrians were injured in separate accidents Friday night and Saturday morning. Clyde S. Evans Jr. of Indianapolis suffered multiple fractures and remained unconscious after being struck on Highway 52 in a likely hit and run. Denise Turgeon of New Brunswick was treated for hip and foot injuries after being struck on Camp Street in heavy rain. Police considered a hit and run and possible hitchhiker scenarios.

Hijacker Kills Passenger On Chicago New York Jet
A Trans World Airlines flight from Chicago to New York was hijacked by a 23 year old man. A passenger was shot and later died as the hijacker commanded the plane to North Vietnam. Deputy Marshal Joseph Zito boarded from the cockpit and exchanged gunfire wounding the hijacker, who was arrested in New York. The crew included Capt Robert E Elder Ronald J Dupuis flight engineer Don E Welshimer and stewardess Catharine Culver.
