Mrs. Claude A. Potts renowned speaker and community worker won the regional speech contest held at the Marott Hotel. She will represent 66 clubs at the international contest in Los Angeles in July with the titled speech Double Miracles.
Boone County Prosecutor James P. Buchanan pledges action to dispose of more than 130 driving cases lingering in Center Justice of the Peace James Darnall's court over five years. He plans to dismiss old matters and refile active ones, with venue rules in town courts and special judges chosen from a panel of attorneys. The State Board of Accounts flagged bookkeeping discrepancies in Darnall's court, with follow ups planned. Deputy prosecutor Allen Wharry leads lower-court work while serving two weeks in the U S Navy.
A car owned by Indianapolis Mayor John J. Barton’s 18 year old son was stolen and driven away while the youth golfed with an uncle. Trooper Wilbur E. Allen recovered the vehicle after pursuing Larry Pryor 29, and Pryor was charged with speeding and driving without a license. He was jailed on Boone County charges and to be held for Indianapolis police. Two Lebanon teens were briefly held after taking a parent's car without permission.
UPI reports heavy fighting in invasion-threatened northern provinces with 119 Communists killed as B52 bombers strike south of the DMZ. At least six Americans dead and 84 wounded amid bombardments near DMZ. U.S. jets claim 100 MiG fighters damaged or destroyed in weekend raids near Hanoi Haiphong.
United Press International reports Indiana state schools added about 6 800 graduates on Sunday and Monday. Butler Rose Poly Earlham Valparaiso and Manchester held ceremonies with Indiana University continuing today. Totals include roughly 5 200 at Indiana University and 12 000+ graduates overall since late May. Speakers urged open minds and inspired ideas.
Reported Middle East cease fire holds despite sporadic clashes between Israeli forces and Arab holdouts. Tass cites Israeli advances into Syria and Jordanian losses, while Israel denies major truce violations. Suez Canal remains closed. Al Ahram notes ships sunk and calls for free passage in peace talks.
A group of Lebanon youths were arrested early Sunday on the downtown public square and Court House grounds for public intoxication and related offenses. Four individuals faced charges under the 1935 and 1985 Alcoholic Beverage Acts, with sentences ranging from fines to jail time.
George E. Linton a 47 year old former Lebanon City Clerk and Treasurer was shot twice and killed today at the Pastime Tavern where he worked as bartender. A unidentified gunman entered the bar demanded money from the cash register and fled after the struggle. Police report the weapon a .32 revolver and no arrests had been made by afternoon.
William Thomas Moore 85, a retired railroad employee, died Sunday morning at National Nursing Home. Obituary appears on page 4.
Marion County hospital per diem charges rise sharply affecting Boone Welfare Department. Marion Robbins notes daily rates reach new highs at several hospitals including $76 for regular patients and $80.75 for open heart cases at Marion County facilities, with Riley and Coleman also increasing fees. Despite the higher costs and a budget cut of about $3,000 from last year, Robbins plans no budget changes as salaries and equipment costs drive the increases.
In downtown Tampa a violent protest erupted as hundreds of Black residents clashed with police, burning shops and looting in a six by six block zone. One officer died of a heart attack, at least 14 injured, and authorities sealed off the area as Gov. Kirk called a dawn meeting with Mayor Nuccio. Police made arrests on charges from breaking and entering to possession of stolen property amid debates on underlying causes.
About 150 National Guardsmen and state troopers sealed a five room house in Happy Hollow Prattville as a five hour confrontation ended. Four men were wounded and no arrests were made. Troopers searched nearby homes for weapons finding a shotgun in Dan Houser Jr. s house amid a powder scent. The event followed the arrest of Stokely Carmichael for disorderly conduct and involved shot gun fire at police.
Prospective jurors were dismissed as attorneys reached a settlement in a Boone County claims case. The estate of Charles S. Mayes, represented by the bank, agreed to about 15 000 dollars for services claimed by Josephine and Cletus Clements from 1952 to 1966. The Clements argued for 52 000 dollars for housework and farm duties. Continuation of circuit court action on a separate complaint remained under judge Charles F. Thompson.
The Lebanon Swimming Pool opening was postponed from Sunday after a pipeline break and shattered glass on the island. Pool manager Richard Payne said repairs aim for a Wednesday reopening as crews work to fix a six inch pipe disrupting circulation and causing dirt and water level drops.
Moscow reported by Tass that the Soviet Union launched an unmanned space station atop a rocket heading to Venus. The UPI bulletin notes the launch as a milestone in space exploration and underscores Tass confirmation from Moscow.
