Seashore pool at Memorial Park opened despite cold weather, drawing 330 swimmers and waders. Pool manager Richard Payne reported strong season ticket sales but still below last year. Hours run daily with staff including Lee Brown as head lifeguard and fellow guards Hawkins and Beard.

Union Township has adopted a unified salary schedule matching Lebanon Schools. Marvin Quick says Robert Perkins will again be principal and teach music and art three days weekly. An eighth teacher will be added, with three elementary positions open this summer under Union Township’s first fixed schedule.

United Press International reports in Saigon that former West Point football hero Bill Carpenter and Capt. Walter Brown of Chattanooga led their men to safety after two days in a Communist trap in Kontum province. U S bombers and artillery delivered a heavy blow, with estimated Communist deaths around 700 and an North Vietnamese force of about 7 000 engaged against U S and Vietnamese troops. Carpenters unit suffered heavy losses but broke out, aided by B 52 strikes and air power. the operation described as a coup de grace for the enemy, with further air sorties continuing beyond the escape.

Twisters Hit Texas Areas During Friday Outbreak
Two tornadoes churned northward through Lubbock Texas injuring 16 and causing over 1 million dollars in damage across Lubbock Abernathy and Plainview. Homes two chicken houses and power infrastructure were damaged while hail up to five inches deep and heavy rain lashed the region.

Furnishings Sold At Hopewell Church Auction

Sinatra's Alleged Assailant Undergoes Brain Surgery
In Beverly Hills Frederick R. Weisman 54 underwent brain surgery after allegedly striking Frank Sinatra at the Polo Lounge Beverly Hills Hotel during Dean Martin's birthday celebration. A witness saw Weisman hit Sinatra. Sinatra did not strike back. Forrest Henry hotel security guard reported seeing a strike and the aftermath with broken glass and a table cloth. Martin and others described a scuffle as they left the scene.

Vern McKinsey Celebrates 50 Years in Masonry
Vern M. McKinsey of Thorntown, aged 79, honored as a 50 year Masonic member in Boone County. He joined Thorn town Lodge 113, F and AM in 1915, progressed through degrees in 1916, and served as lodge master in 1928 and 1946. Worshipful master Frank Morrow and Senior Warden Louis Beesley presented the award, with Kenneth Lemon of Prather Lodge 717 delivering the honorary address. The Eastern Star, Rainbow For Girls, and Wingate Sisters assisted in the ceremony.

Alma Moves Into Atlantic Off North Carolina Coast
Tropical storm Alma swirled in the Atlantic off the North Carolina coast with gale winds and heavy rains. The Miami Weather Bureau warned a cold front could cause erratic motion but Alma was expected to continue seaward along the Carolina Capes. Winds near the center reached about 50 mph as warnings extended from Savannah to the Virginia Capes. the storm had previously killed at least 14 in Cuba and Florida where damage was pegged at 1.5 million dollars insured.

Miss Teresa Cornwell Found Dead at Church Stairway
Teresa M. Cornwell, 84, of Brazil Indiana, was found dead at the foot of a basement stairway in Mount Lebanon Evangelical United Brethren Church in Benwood after attending a missionary meeting. Police say she likely fell backward, fracturing her skull while climbing the stairs as worshipers arrived for a prayer service.
