In Cleveland on January 11 Senator Frederick Steiner of Ohio opened the convention with a strong speech that stirred hopes for a vice presidential bid. Cleveland June 11 after revising the monetary plank and making changes to meet Governor Alf Landon desires the fifteen member resolutions sub committee completed its work on the platform to be submitted to the Republican national convention. The committee recessed for an hour and will report to the full committee and convention later. The money plank was negotiated with Senator Borah and made a sound money plank opposing inflation. The sub committee rejected a constitutional amendment for six minimum wages and adopted a plank for federal regulation of public utilities with a stance against bureaucratic control in utility appeals. A direct pledge against inflation was written into the platform, stopping short of Landon’s full hard money aim.
Boone County Board of Public Welfare reports sixty pensioners under the 1933 Old Age Pension Act have not filed new aid applications. New forms were mailed May 22. those failing to return or reapply by June 22 will be dropped from the list. Aid amounts for new applicants stay the same until investigation. Forms for blind and dependent children aid were received locally.
Max Wickersham of Indianapolis, publisher of The Petroleum Digest, speaks in Cleveland in support of Governor Alf Landon. He recalls their boyhood in Independence Kansas and notes Landon’s political skill and family influence including a $50,000 church organ gift. Also highlighted is Colonel Hiram Bearss, famed Indiana delegate and Medal of Honor recipient.
Gordon Taylor of Laporte has been elected state president of the Elks Association, succeeding O Ray Miner of Warsaw. Taylor was previously first vice president. New vice presidents include Milo Mitchell Linton Raymond Thomas Terre Haute and Claude Thompson Frankfort. Glen Miller Logansport gains fourth vice presidency. W C Groebl Shelbyville re elected secretary for his seventh term and L Yoder Goshen named treasurer.
Cleveland June 11 Former President Herbert Hoover drew a long sustained ovation at the Republican national convention as he denounced the New Deal. He warned Roosevelt could threaten the judiciary and liberty, urged backing for the Supreme Court, and charged the New Deal with limiting output and raising prices. The crowd answered with repeated affirmations as Hoover argued the nation must halt the retreat from American freedom.
Members of the Lebanon Lions Club at Centenary church heard M. M. Hamilton of Dover High School discuss 4 H Club work, Boone county growth, and public cooperation benefits. He noted the program aids Boys and Girls and benefits the community, with each Lions member pledging personal sponsorship.
Washington June 11 Julius Newland a chemistry professor from Notre Dame University collapsed and died in a Catholic University laboratory while working. The incident ends a long career in chemistry education and his death is reported from the nation’s capital.

After rivals withdraw, party managers push for harmony as Borah and others yield. Knox drafted, Borah silent, and a tentative platform expected as Hoover supporters abandon bids.
