In a wreck off Scituate the passenger liner Fairfax and the oil tanker Pinthis collided amid dense fog. About 40 lives were believed lost with 23 per vessel. eight survivors were brought to Boston aboard the Gloucester. Flames enveloped both vessels as crews and passengers leaped into the sea and lifeboats proved impossible until the Gloucester arrived.
