Leader of land rights band seized in Bernalillo

Reis Lopez Tijerina, longtime chief of a Spanish-American land rights faction that attacked a county courthouse, was captured near Bernalillo New Mexico with his son Hugh Reyes Tijerina and Velasquez a HELP employee. Police called the arrest a fortunate find. The trio was taken into custody after a car stop following their Friday visit to Velasquez.

Cardinal Ritter Dies In St. Louis Hospital

Joseph Cardinal Ritter archbishop of St. Louis and ecumenical leader died at 5 49 a m in DePaul Hospital after two heart attacks this week He was 74 Ritter helped push church reforms of the Vatican II and promoted racial tolerance He became archbishop in 1946 succeeding John Glennon and was made cardinal in 1960 He ordained priesthood in 1917 at St Meinrad Seminary in Indiana

Yanks Bomb Hanoi Power Plant In Fresh Raids

United Press International reports third Hanoi bombing as American planes hit the key power plant and a missile base near the city. A Navy F8 Crusader was shot down and listed as missing in action. In Pleiku, Viet Cong rockets and small arms damaged a major allied base, killing at least 24 and wounding 138 including 51 U.S. troops.

High Winds In County Cause Slight Damage

Sudden thundershowers drenched Boone County with light rain and caused minor damage from wind and lightning. Northeast winds to 55 mph hit Thorntown. trees downed in Clinton and Tippecanoe areas. a lightning strike hit Cyril Little home on North Richardson Street causing a brief blackout. No injuries reported. Little League games at Lebanon were cancelled and Memorial Park was isolated during the downpour.

Rotarians Hear Stark Explain Lebanon Naming

Ralph W. Stark captivated Lebanon Rotarians with a history talk on the county’s growth using early photos. He disputed the Cedars of Lebanon origin, saying Lebanon Ohio inspired the name, and traced the town’s 1831-32 founding by Indianapolis land speculators who moved the county seat from Jamestown to Lebanon.

Indiana August Draft Call Sees 870 Men Selected

Indiana Selective Service Director Col. Robert K. Custer said the August draft call will be about 870 men, roughly 3 percent of the national quota. The Defense Department had announced 29,000 men to be drafted in August, up 9,100 from July and about 1870 more in Indiana than in July.

Guard Starts Two-Week Camp Grayling Training

Members of Battery D 150th Artillery depart Lebanon Armory for annual two week drill at Camp Grayling Michigan joining 38th Infantry Division Indiana National Guard. Lt Ronald W Henry of Knights Town commands with Sgt Willard K Smith as technician. An advance party left Thursday to prep sites for overnight bivouac in southern Michigan. The unit of 107 members trains at battalion level with a military review planned end of week for state officials and newsmen.

Four ISU Students Sentenced for Theft in Terre Haute

Four Indiana State University students were sentenced in Terre Haute City Court to two days in jail for theft of 500 dollars worth of goods from a local motel. Judge Edward S. Everett fined each 10 dollars and costs, suspended. Defendants include three football players Martin C. Friedman Michael D. Hoke and Richard C. Bartone and Kenneth D. Swaim the night manager. Restitution to the Midtown Motel was ordered.

Investigation of Accident in Memorial Park

Police investigated an auto crash in Memorial Park where a cement pylon was struck and 60 to 70 yards of sod torn up. The 1967 Corvette owned by Richard Harmon, 22, Lebanon, sustained about $300 in damage. An arrest is pending as officers reported the owner was stopped after another car followed. Several minor collisions were reported: Garrard and Foster at West Washington St. with $125 total damage, Cundiff and Dickerson at Citizens Bank Lot with $150 and $50 damage, and Ferguson and Merrill at 2005 North Lebanon St. with $150 damage to the Ferguson auto. No citations issued.
