Dubuque Hotel Fire Death Toll May Exceed Fifteen

Fire officials in Dubuque fear the Canfield Hotel blaze could claim more than 15 lives as search crews comb wrecked debris. Officials report 83 survivors and 145 guests registered, with many guests trapped on upper floors as flames swept through the 200 room four story hotel. Patrolman O Brien aided rescue by guiding victims to a fire escape while a safety search was halted after the fourth floor wing was deemed unsafe.

Bus Bandits Plunder Money Pouch On Chicago Suburban Route

In Chicago on June 10 two bandits robbed a Loop district suburban bus of a money pouch carrying Lyons weekend receipts. They boarded at a Loop station, struggled with driver William Hill and a passenger, escaping with the pouch carried by Clinton Claybourn, a 38 year old messenger. Claybourn said he was struck on the head with no weapon and a bullet pierced a hat worn by a pale passenger.

Musical Tea by First Presbyterian Woman's Union

One of the year's outstanding musical events will be the annual musical tea at the First Presbyterian Church auditorium on Wednesday afternoon at 2.30. Paul R. Matthews of Tabernacle Presbyterian Church Indianapolis and vocal artist Fran Walker, former local residents, will perform with Mrs. Cletus Walker as accompanist. Indianapolis police sought two teenage robbers who held up a downtown movie theater last night. A cashier was threatened with a pistol as the pair demanded cash and fled in a black sedan after escaping through an alley. The amount stolen was about 100 dollars.

Washington report states President Truman will send Congress a message tomorrow on the Case strike control bill. Ten Meet Violent Deaths in State Report

United Press recounts ten violent deaths in Indiana and nearby areas. Supreme Court upholds monopolistic tobacco penalties

The Supreme Court today affirmed fines totaling over 250000 against American, Liggett & Myers and Ro Ro Reynold in a price monopoly case. The government charged the firms set a leaf and manufactured tobacco price monopoly. The companies argued rivalry undermined a monopoly claim and appealed from a Sixth Circuit ruling. Lebanon fields first Junior Legion baseball team

For the first time a Junior Lion baseball team has been organized in Lebanon, sponsored by the Fred Siess Ford Company and Emmett Brown Post of the American Legion. Fay Isenhower will manage, with William S. Heath as athletic director and Fred Siess as dealer sponsor. Eligible players are boys 17 and under. A meeting will be held.
