The First Battalion 139th Field Artillery begins a two day basic field artillery school at the Lebanon Armory. About 20 officers and 80 non commissioned officers plus special details attend. Major Claude Crooks and Captain John Edwards lead staff with James H Hoy directing a concert for visitors. Lessons run Saturday to Sunday afternoon ahead of Camp Knox encampment.

Civil War Letter From Battlefield Reveals Horrors
Wichita Kansas June 10. A Wichita woman treasures a Civil War letter written on the battlefield by her uncle Robert Adams of the 67th Pennsylvania Volunteers. Dated May 17 1864 the letter describes a fierce fight 10 days long with heavy losses and a brutal charge near breastworks where men were cut down by minnie balls. He laments the war’s toll but says they hope to end it that summer.

Bandits abducted Rock Island County Treasurer E. Clifford Hall from his Moline home at 3 a.m. They forced him to open the courthouse vault and stole about $4,000. The trio then drove him back to Moline, binding and gagging Hall and his family, who could not identify the robbers. Officers received descriptions from the victims.

Eugene C. Ashby 69 secretary of a $1,000,000 Building and Loan Association died by suicide at the Stevens hotel in Chicago. He left a note saying he was broken up over his late wife Emma and health fears from cancer. His brother Edgar of Indianapolis said finances were not a cause. Ashby had registered Thursday and used carb liquids then a gunshot. He wrapped in a blanket, body found in bathroom with a glass of poison in adjoining room. He had sent a letter to his brother after arriving and had planned to visit his niece. He was active in Ladoga church and Masonic lodge and belonged to a prominent Montgomery county family.
