Crowds of delegates from across the nation descend on St Louis for the Republican National Convention. The meeting intensifies as financial plank debates and seat contests occupy the National Committee while colored delegates seek quarters and support from McKinley headquarters.
Indiana Republicans protest hotels and restaurants excluding colored delegates from the convention. Chairman Gently and Secretary Mansfield telegrammed the Business Men's League urging action. Rumors say McKinley favors Charles W. Fairbanks as permanent chairman. Fairbanks declines comment. Seven Indiana delegates meet in St. Louis to choose a national committeeman. candidates include Durbin Hawkins Neteker and Huston.
At a Republican county gathering, delegates clashed during the Eighth district meeting. Desks overturned, chairs thrown, and many injured required a 20 officer deployment to restore order. Reformers backed W. A. Stone in several districts, while the Quay faction bolted, planning a new slate. Washington correspondents arrived for the national convention amid ongoing political tension. A separate incident in Parnty Uls involved a fatal confrontation between two farmers, ending with murder charges.
In Kentucky's circuit court the main deposition day featured twenty two depositions read in the forenoon and about eleven in the afternoon. Defense experts were cross examined by Colonel Nelson. The proceedings focused on the character of George H. Jackson and the alibi attempts for Walling. Dr F L A Davis and Dr Edwin F Landy offered testimony on Pearl Bryan's murder with dramatic cross examination revealing uncertainty about beheading and blood evidence. The case also touched on Walling's age, prior character, and the McNevin family defense winning little.
Colonel Richard Thompson marked his eighty seventh birthday at Havre Indiana. A public reception by his daughter Mrs D W Henry followed a day at home with young friends. His recent state convention speeches revived his younger fire and eloquence.
The coroner s jury ruled Frank Mayo died from fatty degeneration of the heart. Memorial services were held at the Elke rooms with Roland Reed delivering the chief address. After services, the body was escorted to the depot by the Elka and accompanied to Philadelphia by the Roland Reed and Primrose West companies.
