Generally fair conditions persist through Sunday with mild nights. Highs will reach the middle to upper 80s, with lows in the 60s and southwest winds 10 to 15 mph today and Sunday, tapering to 6 to 12 mph tonight. Chance of precipitation remains about 5 percent.
An express train struck a halted local in Mount Vernon New York killing one and injuring about 135. Passengers were thrown from seats and some trapped as authorities assess brake function and possible human error while officials interview workers and witnesses.
Washington UP I special Watergate prosecutor Archibald Cox was assigned an extra duty probing the settlement of a federal antitrust suit against ITT. Attorney General Richardson said the ITT inquiry overlaps with Watergate and Cox will handle actions deemed appropriate. A gunman took a Greyhound bus with 16 aboard near Placerville, robbed several passengers, then shot himself when deputies cornered him. Passenger Kristen Cooper fled a stolen car as deputies pursued. the suspect Keith Barngerober, 22, was hospitalized in satisfactory condition.
Houston reports Skylab astronauts Conrad Kerwin and Weitz refreshed after two showers as they plan a 6000 mile earth resources survey from Washington state to Brazil. They review plans for flooding effects, coal mining impacts, and high resolution photo mapping for Interior maps while dealing with cooling system issues. Kerwin conducts blood analysis in space and the crew describes a parasol shielding incident aboard the station.
A summery weekend was in prospect for Indiana with near 90 degree temperatures predicted and only a slim chance of showers through Monday. Today and Sunday were forecast to be fair to partly cloudy with overnight lows in the 60s. Highs reached 86 at South Bend and Evansville, 87 at Louisville, and 88 at Cincinnati, while lows ranged from 62 at Terre Haute to 69 at Fort Wayne and Lafayette.
William M. Smith, an honor student and champion diver, was barred from graduation after setting off a firecracker outside the principal's office. A federal judge denied a reversal of the suspension, but the school board allowed him to receive his diploma and attend as a spectator. Smith plans to enter Purdue University to study engineering.
