Continuance Granted for Two Burglary Suspects
Barry Smith 19 and Melvin Carpenter Jr. 21, both Indianapolis residents, seek delays to consult counsel as Superior Court Judge Paul Johnson Jr. grants Carpenter a two week continuance to June 23 before arraignment. They are accused of breaking into William Harros home on May 23 where Harros' son Gene shot Carpenter as he fled. Both remain free on $10,000 bond. Also charged is William Dixon 24 of Lebanon with theft of brass shaving from Stewart-Warner properties on June 4 and 6. arraignment date not set.

Pair of Elkhart Men Face Lebanon Burglary Trial
Anthony Cizmadja and Burt Ransford, both of Elkhart, are charged with burglary in Lebanon for a wall opening heist of watches rings and other items valued over 3000 from Wall Jewelry Store. Police say they confessed to the Lebanon break in and recalled related Indiana burglaries. They previously pled guilty to a tavern and appliance store break in in Elkhart and were sentenced to 25 years at Pendleton Reformatory. Prosecutor Burns notes no confession to Boone County crimes and says the affidavit will be sent to the State Reformatory for return if paroled.

West Point football star Bill Carpenter a captain with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam ordered a napalm strike on his own position to help wipe out a North Vietnamese unit overrunning his company. Night fell as a fierce firefight continued with hundreds of enemy troops, Carpenter’s unit reporting heavy hand to hand combat. The hurricane Alma struck the Florida panhandle with 90 mph winds after veering from a direct Tampa threat. Evacuations topped 20,000 along the coast from the Keys to Tampa Bay as tides 7 to 10 feet were forecast and power lines fell. A Miami youth died from a downed power line and a tornado touched Coral Gables without severe injuries.
