In Attica Indiana Jasper Bales 42 fired during divorce proceedings killing Grover Smith 45 a World War veteran and injuring his mother in law Marian Abolt. After being cornered he killed himself on the Abolt farm two rifles a shotgun and a revolver found beside him.
The Boone County Bar Association met in the courthouse to plan a memorial for the late Judge Samuel R. Artman funeral and burial set for Tuesday afternoon. Judge John W. Hornaday presided and named a committee to draft the memorial to be presented Saturday at 9 30 am with brief addresses eulogizing Artman’s life and achievements open to friends.
Thomas F. Devaney elected president of Ulen and Company at a board meeting held Saturday. He has 14 years with the firm after leaving Stone and Webster and succeeds Thomas S. Shepperd as head of the operating committee directing company operations. Dividend set at 1.60 per share with 40 cent quarterly payout July 15 to holders of record July 1.
Six men die and six are seriously injured when a 3000 foot intake tunnel under the Detroit river at the waterworks collapses after an explosion. Three other workers escape as rescuers recover bodies and search debris. Names include Samuel Seaball Pleas Tallison A M Massey E Howe J Harper C Zulaski. In San Francisco a separate blast on the Hetch Hetchy project claims seven lives with two recovered after dark.
Edward C Gullion Lebanon attorney and Democrat is urged to run for clerk of the Appellate and Supreme courts. Boone county leaders and Ninth District back the move as Indianapolis convention opens tonight to rally delegates for Gullion. Gullion seeks to defeat Indianapolis candidate Joseph Baker and is known for a long Boone county School superintendent tenure and a Indiana University law degree. Continued note on page three.
The Daily Vacation Bible School opened at First Baptist Church with 145 enrollees and 3 teachers plus 30 helpers. A kindergarten program serves preschoolers. sessions run three weeks. Prominent Hoosiers will attend a community event in Lebanon and Boone County as scholars honor Samuel R. Artman, longtime jurist and public servant who died after injuries from a fall.
A Blitzen speed boat built by Hicks Body Company of Lebanon and driven by Bob Jones of Indianapolis won the Ivar Hennings trophy in the Class C division 8 five mile race at South Bend on Sunday. The Lebanon firm’s boats have dominated this season, with success at Terre Haute and Broad Ripple, and will compete in Ohio river races at Madison on July 4 and 5.

He claims 1886 efforts to win recognition have failed and ridicules Columbus while asserting Earth as a circular plane with air as the supporting vault.
A forenoon lecture during the Lebanon Exposition and Good Will Jubilee opens June 18 and runs to June 21. An interior decoration expert will cover furniture arrangement, wood finishes, oriental effects, color in rugs and draperies, art placement, and window dressings. Secretary Littrell predicts strong appeal to housewives.
Portland Indiana June 9 The Farmers and Merchants Bank a $160 000 institution at Bryant a town of about 1200 inhabitants eight miles north of here was raided by two unmasked bandits and robbed of approximately 2500 dollars. Continued on page three.
Roy N. Ottinger today announced he has purchased the Manhattan Cafe on West South Street and will operate it under his personal management. The cafe offers counter and table service with a planned emphasis on short orders. Ottinger brings years of restaurant experience and broad county acquaintance.
Berlin June 9 The Socialist Executive Committee issues an appeal to the workers of Russia to end Bolshevist rule and ally with Socialists to defend freedom and democracy. The proclamation warns of class hatred and a potential counter revolution, signaling a warlike stance against the Bolshevist International and prompting varied reactions from Communist and religious supporters.
Bucharest June 9 King Carol II failed to reconcile with his wife Princess Helen of Greece after years of scandal. Helen refused all conciliatory efforts and demanded custody of their son Michael, who had been kept at Cotroceni Palace since Carol’s accession.
Police hunt two youths who robbed Frank Hausmann bank president and his wife of jewels valued at 10000 dollars after trailing them from a theatre to their home. The thieves targeted jewelry including a pin bracelet and a ring after a restaurant stop following the show.
Memorial Sunday observed annually by the Business and Professional Women's Club will be held June 15 with members attending church in a body as a tribute to deceased members Carrie Leonard Bessie Lame May Routh and Zenta Pavey. Vice president Hazel Whittinghill is in charge and the Baptist Church is selected for worship. Members meet at the church at 10 30 Sunday morning.
The Boone Circuit Court judge presided in notable cases including a nationally noted liquor license dispute. Judge Artman denied Indianapolis saloon keeper Albert Soltau a license, calling the saloon an outlaw and shaping doctrine later in his book The Legalized Outlaw.
