Storms Hit Boone Area Injuring One, Causing thousands in Damages

Severe storms swept the Boone area causing winds hail and heavy rain with tornado threats. One person Brenda Ball 19 pregnant from Whitestown injured when her car hit a fence. Another passenger Benny Ottinger 15 sustained possible broken pelvis. Boone REMC reported extensive outages with repairs continuing into morning.

Lebanon LCSD votes to build bare bones middle school

Lebanon County school board votes to start a 2.5 million first phase for a new middle school on the old junior high site. Plan calls for 7th and 8th graders, with 9th grade moving to the senior high. phased expansion may add gym, auditorium, and new elementary later. funding from a 75 cent building fund over 20 years.

Tornado warning sparks confusion across Boone County towns

Amid hot humid weather June 7 1971 a tornado warning circulated though no tornado touched ground. Whitestown Zionsville and Jamestown reported funnel clouds while Lebanon officials said no confirmation of danger, triggering alarm system debates and traffic jams as residents heeded warnings.

Sewage Workers Join Bridgetenders In N Y Strike

New York sewer workers joined a wildcat pension strike by bridge tenders, shutting down 11 of 13 treatment centers and dumping about 1.3 billion gallons of raw sewage daily into surrounding waterways. By 11 a.m. EDT 8,000 of 122,000 union members were off the job as the pension bill stalled in committee.

Whitcomb names three to new state posts

Indiana Governor Whitcomb announced three top appointments to vacant offices. Joseph R. Root becomes commissioner of the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, replacing Trudy Etherton who resigned. State Sen. W. W. Hill Jr. is named chairman of the Indiana Public Service Commission, succeeding Robert Webb. Whitcomb also names W Calvert Brand to his staff as Root’s successor.

Lebanon Teachers Protest No Pay Hike After Board Vote

The Lebanon Community School board approved a 1972 salary schedule for 170 teachers with no raise beyond the 5.5 percent average from increments, despite CTA objections claiming negotiations ended without mutual agreement. Teachers, notified to return contracts by July 15, contends August 1 is their usual deadline.

Lebanon July 4th filmed by MGM for ABC documentary

MGM documentary chief in Culver City eyed Lebanon to film a July Fourth celebration with a parade bike race square dance fireworks and town crowd. If chosen a July 3 4 Hollywood sound and film crew would capture events for a fall ABC telecast. Memorial Park crowds and old fashion oratory may be included.
