Indianapolis June 8 Governor M Clifford Townsend announced laws from the 1957 General Assembly that take effect immediately. Provisions include tough safety reporting and drunken driving penalties, a state safety committee, soil conservation districts, bans on goods produced in out of state prisons, a fair trade act, codified fish and game laws, compensation for occupational diseases, raising teacher allowances from 500 to 700, and county agricultural agents inspecting mines for safety.

Indianapolis police captured Marion May, 27, of Indianapolis, believed to be the bandit in a Lapel hold up. He allegedly escaped after a Confederate, Lester Howard Brown, 24, of Elwood, was shot and killed by a gram ele ator owner during the attempted robbery at a chapel.
