Fire broke out at the Buxton Steamship wharf in Norfolk on Sunday afternoon. By early Monday the blaze had destroyed seven city blocks and 400 feet of waterfront, with damages estimated around 5 million dollars. Army, navy, and local fire crews fought flames as tugs and fireboats assisted. three firemen and three marines were seriously injured when a wall collapsed. Martial law limited city area as more than 1,000 troops aided the response. The fire began at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and by 8:30 p.m. had spread across ten blocks. The fight extended into the night with high winds driving destruction toward central districts.

Luther Paige aged 39 was charged with murder in Lafayette Ind after authorities said he struck William G Wall 48 with a two by four during elevator demolition at Clark's Hill. Wall died from skull fracture after being knocked sixteen feet to the ground. Paige fled in a car and was later captured in Linden and brought to Crawfordsville for arraignment. Wall's wife lives in Muskogee Okla.
