In Carrollton Georgia sheriff Joseph Merril defied a mob bent on execution saving a Black prisoner framed for murder. State militia intervened and the prisoner was escorted to Atlanta for safety as several bystanders were wounded.
The Potawatomi at Hartford vote to sail for Chicago June 22 under Chief Jusac Quigno after deposing Ciel Charles Pokagon and seven council members for lukewarm support. Frank Williams and others are denied council seats as the group aims to seize Chicago lakefront and then claim broader land rights along the lake from Indiana to Grand Haven under a disputed treaty.
In downtown Houston an indited log theft case spurred a deadly affray. Thomas Bayne and G. Echols killed. J B Perkins mortally wounded. Daya Echols badly hurt. Fayne’s son reportedly present. Vienna June 8 Count Gonlchowsil Austro-Hungarian minister of foreign affairs informed an American deputation that the government could not entertain mediation between Great Britain and the Hoers Decade. The British government had declared it would not accept mediation, and an offer to mediate would be regarded by Great Britain as unfriendly.
A Somerset jury yesterday found six men guilty in connection with the New Dexington bank robbery months ago. Defendants are Py Yank Green, Joseph Hes sing, James Rodgers, Harry J. Sini mone, George Harris, and John Wil Home. A seventh man who escaped with about $4,000 in money and similar in bonds remains at large.
