Thousands warned of the Teton Dam collapse fled to high ground as the 307 foot structure gave way. Officials reported six dead, about 120 injured and 135 missing amid hundreds of millions in eastern Idaho damage. Federal investigators probe the earthen dam's spillway after delays over environmental concerns.
Madison County Sheriff Ford Smith said he was alerted at 11 30 a.m. that the dam would fail, and alarms were sounded as the collapse occurred just before noon. Residents were warned by phone and radio, many fled in panic leaving valuables and pets behind. About one third of the 55 million dam collapsed, sending floods down the Teton and Snake rivers. Idaho Falls workers stacked sandbags and tried to clear debris to save bridges and curb flooding through Sunday.

The first degree murder trial of Donald Keith Norton, 26, was delayed due to a terminology issue in the indictment. The case, tied to the January 9 1976 slayings of his wife Christine Ann and son Brett Norton, was moved from Greensburg to Benton County with no trial date set yet. An alleged accomplice, Benjamin P. Woody, 27, faces similar charges and is slated for Hartford City June 28. Insurance beneficiaries linked to Prudential are noted as a motive factor.
An Amish woman Elizabeth Wickey 22 and her 1-year-old daughter Susan died when a horse drawn buggy was struck broadside at an Adams County intersection. Levi Wickey 22 and his 2-year-old son were injured along with Grant Hurst 20 who drove the car. Hurst was in critical condition at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne.
