Boone County announces warning systems for tornado threats in Lebanon Zionsville Jamestown Advance Thorn Town. Officials describe siren tones bomb blasts and voice instructions with shelters in churches and schools and advise residents to monitor WNON 100.9 and television for updates.
A 39 year old Boone County man and father of three died in a single vehicle crash on State Road 75 two and a half miles south of Advance at 5 10 p m Tuesday. James A Shue of Route 2 Jamestown was thrown from the car and killed instantly after losing control and striking a utility pole. The car rolled two and a half times and rested on its top. Police say seat belts were not used. Shue, born May 8 1934, lived in Advance area and worked at Stewart Warner in Quality Control. He is survived by his widow three sons a sister and three brothers. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Thursday at Myers Chapel of Memories with burial at Old Union Cemetery.
The Boone County Fourth of July celebration includes a Little Miss Boone County contest on June 29 on the Court House lawn starting at 2 30 p.m. Five and under residents may enter by June 23, with 1973 winner to be crowned by 1972 Little Miss Angela Isenhower. Zonta club members organize the event and entry blanks appear in today's Lebanon Reporter.
A 350 pound tigress named Guinevere escaped from her cage as visitors including school children strolled the grounds. The tigress stayed near the feline house and was tranquilized and recaptured soon after with help from staff. An attendant allegedly left the cage door unlatched. Police, zoo director Louis Rhodes, and Dr. Donald Puhliaan assisted as 2000 employees guided visitors to exits.
Final plans announced for the June 10 dedication of the Patrick Henry Sullivan Museum at 255 West Hawthorn. Former Governor Branigan will give the dedicatory address as a flag from the White House is presented. The ceremony features an Army honor guard, music by the local high school band, a ribbon cut, reception, and tours of Indiana and Boone County history.
A Boone County lookback recalls June 6 1944 D Day news from The Lebanon Reporter. Extra editions were printed as Allied forces landed in Normandy with 4000 ships and 11000 planes while local churches held prayer services and residents reflected quietly. Local figures included Lt Col Mike Murphy and T Sgt Wilson Roberts. Goods and ads from the era are noted, with prices on beds dresses paint and theater shows.
