Crash Programs Proposed For New US Weapons
Defense Secretary Melvin R. Laird told a Senate panel that the United States must push ahead with crash programs to develop new submarines and bombers for the 1980s after claiming the Soviet Union has far outstripped the U S in weapon numbers. He cited a $1.5 billion request to accelerate Trident submarines and the B1 bomber, noting these would be ready only after the five year SALT offensive cap. He said the SALT deal reduces some ABM plans but does not curb key offensive weapons and that deployment of a second Safeguard site remains undecided. Proxmire criticized Pentagon spending tied to Nixon summit arms control.
