Convicted Murderer Escapes From LaGrange Jail Today
Neal Reutz 39 of Denver, recently convicted of first degree murder in the slaying of Thomas Schultz 42 in South Bend, escaped LaGrange County Jail at 12 20 am. A deputy released him for a phone call, authorities say. A car stolen from Reutz's brother’s home in Michigan is suspected to be his mode of flight. Police deployed helicopter and tracking dogs as interrogations of nearby kin continued. The jury had recommended life imprisonment. sentencing was pending after May verdict.

City Businessman Bill Taylor Dies Watching Son Play Golf
John William Bill Taylor a Lebanon business leader and church figure died of a heart attack Friday in Logansport while watching his son Jack play in the IHSAA regional golf tournament. He was 25 July 1920 birth, a 1946 Lebanon marriage to Donna Hughes, Navy veteran, owner of Taylor and Smock Furniture. Funeral services set for 10 a.m. Tuesday at Russell and Hitch Funeral Home with Elks rites Monday evening.

A Zionsville mother Judi Turner 24 and her two infant sons Christopher 1 and Michael 8 months were seriously hurt Friday when their car left Country Road 500 South near Herr Elevator, struck a tree and rolled. Turner suffered chin lacerations. Christopher facial lacerations and possible concussion. Michael facial lacerations nose fracture and possible concussion. All were taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis from Witham. Trooper Ed Goff investigated. Also, George Winger’s home near Elizaville experienced extensive vandalism with missing portable TV, ash trays broken, dishes broken, and lamps or TV glass damaged.

Coal miner hijacks 737 seeks Tel Aviv flight
Glenn Elmo Riggs a 59 year old retired West Virginia coal miner with black lung was arraigned on air piracy charges after hijacking a United Airlines 737 en route from Charleston to Newark. He forced a landing at Dulles and demanded a larger plane to Tel Aviv. Riggs admitted heavy drinking and said he did not know how he boarded the plane. He was ordered held without bond until a June 11 preliminary hearing in Alexandria Virginia.

Five Die As Explosive Truck Crash Blasts Georgia Town
A collision between a foreign car and a trailer carrying 20 000 pounds of dynamite and slurry triggered a massive blast on U S Highway 78 in Waco Georgia. Five killed and at least 35 injured.
