Accident Victims Reported In Poor Condition

Mrs. Bonetha Cragan of Route 6 was seriously injured in a Monday night crash on State Road 39 north and underwent surgery early Tuesday at Witham Hospital in poor condition. Her daughter Deborah, 15, transferred to Riley Hospital Indianapolis in critical condition and not yet conscious.

Indpls. Mrs Helen Miller Malloch 74 founder of the Federation of Press Women died of a heart attack in her hotel room just before the 27th annual convention open. A novelist and short story writer she helped organize the group in Chicago in 1937 and was to be honored at a founder’s luncheon.

Wells Band Heads to Chicago for Chicagoland Festival

Severe storms and fatal lightning strike in Indiana

A rash of thundershowers and severe storms moved across Indiana on Tuesday. A 52 year old patient at the State Hospital in Logansport was killed by a lightning bolt while seeking shelter. Cities reporting rainfall included Portland and Shoals with others like Terre Haute Indianapolis and Evansville noting high temperatures. Overnight lows were in the 60s with upper 80s expected. daily showers were forecast through the five day period with expected totals limited to tenth to half an inch central and south parts of the state.

State Highway Forces Downtown Parking Changes in Lebanon

State Highway workers started at 2 p.m. to day to reduce parking spaces at downtown Lebanon intersections of State Roads 3 and 32. The move follows a dawn letter to Mayor Herbert L. Shumate Art Donation to Lebanon Public Library

Mr and Mrs Bayard Shumate recently moved to California and donated a painting by the late Ila Shumate to Lebanon Public Library. The artwork depicts historic local sites including the Shumate printing shop, a former livery stable garage, the watchman’s shanty and the courthouse dome, spanning 1898 to the 1960s. The piece is displayed in the Reference Room with a second painting by Ila Shumate’s mother showcased near the charge-out desk. Sun Shine Art influences are noted in later works from Cornwall and Cape Cod.
