Washington June 5 A gentleman's agreement over President Roosevelt's Supreme Court bill delays action as opponents push postponement to avoid blocking relief on money bills. Robinson and leaders discuss a future compromise while debates weigh the Logan plan and judicial enlargements.
A state revenue bureau warns wage earners and firms to file monthly reports for old age program taxes. Penalties include fines up to 1 and years in prison. Officials vow to pursue violators as the law requires payroll tax collection and income reporting.
Howard Christensen a 16 year old and Norman Westberg a 17 year old received life sentences for the murder of Ada Carey a school teacher who gave them a ride in Chicago. They pled guilty before Circuit Judge John Hughes and were sent to Sioux Falls penitentiary after a posse captured them following the May 21 killing. Westberg shot Carey twice and Christensen struck her with a hammer during the attempted robbery.
White Plains reports the Rockefeller will and a codicil dated October 3, 1934 place the income from a 325 000 000 trust fund to granddaughter Margaret De Cuevas and her descendants. The trust excludes other grandchildren and follows blurring language about gifts to the elder daughter and late Mrs. Bessie Rockefeller Strong. Mrs De Cuevas, of Lakewood New Jersey, has two children and life income from the trust continues through her death when the fund is divided.
In Washington on June five, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board reported that the number of Federal Savings and Loan Associations with assets above 1 million dollars grew from 177 to 204 in the past nine months. Of these 204, based in 33 states, nine exceed 5.6 million and five exceed 10 million. The associations, known as National Banks of the savings and loan business, are local mutual drift institutions privately owned and managed but under federal supervision and examination.
Indianapolis, June 5. Heavy footed Wilbur Shaw, winner and record breaker in the Indianapolis 500, will leave for Chicago today for the 100 mile race there tomorrow. Shaw’s injured right foot, bandaged after the victory, may keep him from starting the 100 mile event.
Chang Soo Lee, a Korean houseman convicted last March of attempting to poison Mr and Mrs George Reeves, jumped eight floors to his death today from the Chambers of Supreme Court Justice Sydney Syme in Yonkers. He had been brought from Sing Sing on a writ of habeas corpus.
In Chicago on June 5, twelve department chiefs within the Townsend National Recovery Plan announced resignations at the national headquarters. The move followed claims that Dr. Francis E B Townsend used organization machinery and funds to back an anti Roosevelt campaign opposing liberalization of the Supreme Court. Discontent echoed at Townsend Weekly and other centers with supporters of J W Brinton amid broader rifts.
Indianapolis June 3 Three softball promotion leagues will combine to stage what is predicted as the largest state softball tournament ever held in Indiana Quent in K Hartke state director the WPA announced here The Amateur Softball Association of Indiana and the Indiana Recreation Association will cooperate with the Indiana WPA to hold the tourney The agreement provides every team in the tournament affiliate with the Amateur Soft-ball Association with play conducted under rules of that organization The state will be divided into northern and southern zones for the playoff with approximately 56 sectional tournaments being held in each zone.
Twelve hundred Walgreen drug chain clerks in Chicago strike seeking higher wage scales and union recognition. Unions involved are Soda Fountain Employer Union and Retail Drug Clerks Union, both AFL affiliates. Company says wages and conditions are not an issue.
The Duke of Windsor and his American born bride settle in Schloss Wasserleonburg Carinthia for a quiet honeymoon. They plan to fade from public view gradually with advice from Scotland Yard inspector Storrier while the press is kept at a distance. Munising and Newberry in Michigan mobilize state police under Gov Murphy to stop threatened lumberjack actions. Sheriff says two mobs, one 500 strong, patrol the woods while 6,000 workers are on strike across Upper Peninsula camps. Police prepare to defend courthouses and outskirts.
The Lebanon Rotary Club heard K Beeson of Purdue University discuss an alfalfa survey in Boone County at the Alen Country Club luncheon. Beeson noted rapid alfalfa growth, its value in crop rotation, and its rise as an insurance crop. County agent C K Whistler said Boone cultivated 3000 acres last year and could rise to forty thousand in coming years.
Detroit June 5 workers at the Ford plant massed for a protest meeting as 140000 UAW members gathered. A rival group named Ford Brotherhood of America circulated membership cards while Ford officials claimed no knowledge of it. Harry Bennett said 80000 of 90000 workers signed loyalty pledges, and a grand jury probe into the Ford riot continued as process servers failed to serve him a subpoena.
Washington officials reiterated a long standing policy against delivering unusual mail parcels to strike bound plants. Deputy Postmaster General J M Donaldson said no complaint from Republic Steel and that the company could ship food via its own railroad. He condemned efforts to mail food into the Warren facility as an attempt to involve the Post Office Department.
Three persons were burned to death and two seriously injured today after a head on collision in the Sanderssdale section of Southbridge Massachusetts. Two victims were burned beyond recognition. William Cox of Southbridge was among the injured and was taken to a hospital along with another victim, James Heilly, 23, Southbridge, owner of one car, who died.

Chicago June 5 Mayor Edward J. Kelly gave Republic Steel 45 hours to remove loyal workers from the South Chicago plant hit by a strike. He invoked a health ordinance banning housing in buildings not fit for such use and warned police would enforce the evacuation if needed. The plant has kept producing with a loyal crew for ten days of strike.
Desperate efforts were made to save two of the murderers of Harry R Miller from the electric chair. Indiana attorneys petitioned Governor Townsen to commute Frank Gore Williams to life imprisonment while others sought to depose condemned men. Hicks has an appeal pending in the State Supreme Court. Decisions awaited.
Bulletin reports a school excursion barge capsized near Plenita Romania, with at least 12 confirmed dead and 25 missing feared drowned. Separate note from Warren Ohio says Trumbull County Court curbed picketing at Republic Steel plants in Warren and Niles under Judge Lynn B. Griffith.
June 5 report shows Britain opposing joint punitive measures if Spanish warships are attacked and denying Italian demands to land troops. The Almeria bombardment by German ships prompted Italy and Germany to withdraw from the Non Intervention Committee, solidifying Britain and France's push to keep the Spanish conflict within limits. Elsewhere, Spanish loyalist circles and frontier observers believe General Emilio Mola died in a time bomb incident aboard his aircraft, contradicting claims of monarchist leanings and stressing internal rebel tensions amid Franco.
A special police guard was posted today over John and Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. in Cambridge after Franklin reported a prowler bothered them at Plympton Street, where they study at Harvard. Franklin staged a foot race with the intruder but lost him in an alley. Another Harvard student at the house allegedly had $6 trousers taken from a chair back, with the prowler reaching through a window.
